After doing many a search for instructions that would be helpful for a first time Safari install I drew a blank. Many good discussion threads but no step by step instructions with pics. The ones from the VW manual are less than useful in my opinion and the ones from Izz's had no actual pics and only basic info. So I took a bunch of pics while installing mine and wrote instructions. Wish I had even more pics to put in here but I hope this helps the next guy. :)

| I have them as well as the one eyed duck (although the PO put a 65 wiper assembly in my bus so it's all incorrect). I will put them on in when I get another wave of energy. I'm in San diego so it wont be important for a good long while. :D |

The latches are on backwards.
When you reach for the latchs in front of you, you should be able to easily grasp the latch while pressing the button with your thumb. It's easier to use that way.

Does the towel come with the kit?

The windows were originally installed to the bus, but I had to get new glass cut and new seals.
The wooden spacers to keep the windows open 1" or 2" at freeway speeds (depending on how you rotate them) did come with the bus.
The towels I had to buy separately. ;) |

Probably just a few of the many little mistakes I've made along the way. That's why I need you guys. My whole bus would be upside down if I didn't get feedback. :D
I looked at a bunch of pics of the latches and thought I had it right. Oh well. Quick fix though. Thanks. :) Oh and thanks for the mirror thing as well. Another quick fix. |

Nice tutorial!
Not to pile on with the "quick fixes", lol, the links on your pictures (I assume they are to larger versions), don't seem to be working. The hrefs look like this: about:DSC09905.JPG/DSC09905-full;init:.JPG |

| Thank you for taking the time to post the steps for us. I will be installing safari windows on my '63 here pretty soon, so these will help with the install. |

Hmmm. Those were working before. :? I'll work on that too. I fixed the other stuff so I'll post new pix and then put it back up this weekend. Thanks for letting me know. :) |

Simple and elegant solutions Clara. I'm going to start gathering the pieces. I'll start with the towels. I saw an infomercial recently about synthetic chamois MADE IN GERMANY. I'm a little hesitant although to go with anything with a name that contains"Sham."

Nice tutorial, I might suggest to others that a threaded screw plate installed inside the upper window frame is actually the best way for installing the safari windows. It allows for proper alignment of the windows as it makes for adjustability and is how vw did it on oe safari's. When my 65 standard bus was restored, we made and installed them by means of openings we made with a small cold chisel. The openings were repaired with welding. My 65 came from the factory with the indent in the upper window frame for safari's. I'm not sure that all buses came with the indent but it just made it logical to install the screw plates. I have pics if anyone is interested in this method.
