Good greif  Looks like a train wreck for that kind of money. I think the big problem is that the owner has had it for 20+ years. Probably too sentimental about it. That’s got to be clouding his judgment when it comes to pricing it.

I thought the same thing a little on the high side...

You know, just a little over 10 years ago, you could go to a show and buy a set of Egg tail lights for $100 bucks or so. The internet is creating this false value that everything is going for now, and the parts contrary to what alot of people think are not anymore scarce than they were then.

Happy buying.

When I got into his hobby in '94, egg lights were still $300-$400.

I agree with your assumption on the internet pushing prices to higher levels.

As for scarcity of parts, I would have to disagree. Back in mid 90s, the Pomona swapmeet had most of everything enthusiasts wanted. Shiney parts, rare acessories, complete cars for a decent prices etc....Seemed every other vendor had some sort of vintage Empi part. Fast foward 12 years later and it's all changed. Visit the next Pomona swapmeet & you'll have no problem find brakes, transmissions & other grease covered parts. Where are all the cool parts?

I have never been on the west coast to any shows or swap meets, but on the east coast, there was always an abundance of parts, and for the most part there still is.

Pomona has done a 180 since the 90's.

I think the internet has done 2 things to the part market, 1) it has opened up the pool of potential buyers to the entire world (for sellers). 20+ years ago, you might have had a club newsletter classifieds, but that was about it for exposure. Today, between eBay and this site, you pretty much have instant access to put anything you want to sell in front of the entire world of VW enthusiasts, for pretty much nothing. What does this do? It opens up the market of buyers, increases competition, and thus, tends to make prices go up.

The other thing is it has made a lot of people (like me) not want to bring "cool" parts to the swaps at VW shows. Why should I? I have to schlep all that stuff down, unpack it, lay it out, babysit it all day, and I get what, a few hundred VW guys coming by to look at it? I'd rather take pics at home, write up a nice description, and pop it up on this site or eBay and let the world browse it. If it is mostly small stuff, it's easy to ship... way easier then hauling it across the state lines. And I will get the best price for it. No brainer.

A bit sad really, I realize that if everyone took this attitude, there would just be no swap meets at the shows, and those are a huge draw for me. But from a pure business perspective, that is how world markets are going. The internet is the sales vehicle.

If I lived the next town over to where the VW shows were I would probably swap, but any decent VW show for me is 2-3 hours each way at least...

JMO....

Egg taillights? If you mean the ones for an oval I got my pair in 2007 at the Pomona swap meet for $40

btleboy Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:18 pm

For some reason when i see a beetle with its nose punched in it looks so sad. I always feel bad and want to see them fixed up. I hope someone can talk this gentlemen into the right ballpark on the price and save it.

Those were probably '56-61 "snowflakes"?

Eggs were slightly smaller and were '54 only if I'm not mistaken.
