| Can the bearing on the side of the irs transmission, behind the cv joint be replaced by removing the side cover and not pulling the transaxle |

Sure if you have the room to work.
Just did a little read on the repair manual....Looks like you will need a puller of sorts. |

| No you can't do it in the car. You can't get the side cover off, the frame horn is in the way. |

| If I pull the tranny and remove the side cover plate will I be able to remove the inner race from the exposed shaft? |

|
| The inner race is not on the exposed shaft, it is on the diff housing. Use a puller to remove it. |

| I assume what you are sayings is the entire bearing will be on the side cover when it comes off? |

| That diagram doesn't show that the race remains with the cover (that you are removing), while the rest of the bearing remains on the diff body. |

Item #38 in diagram #9 is the outer oil seal, not the bearing.
Get out to your car and start taking it apart. |

| Got it all apart and see how it works now but I dojn't understand how to preload the tapered thrust bearings that I will be installing tomorrow.I read something about shims but I don't see any in my tranny |

| Look at the bearing's outer race that is pressed into the side cover. Under that is the shim(s). |

| I found the shim and read were it sets the backlash on the ring gear by preloading the lapered roller bearings.Since I am replacing only the tapered roller bearings would I be ok with using only the original shim and not worry about backlash measurement? |

No you won't. Backlash and diff bearing preload will be wrong. It will make noise, and will not survive as long as if the preload and backlash were correct. |

| not to hi jack but what about a 5 rib. are those same bearing hard to change. i just found out i have a bad 3rd gear in my 3 rib and i have this 5 rib i could put in if changing the bearings can be done without tearing the case apart. |
