I removed the fenders from my Fastback and I was wondering how to remove the years of road tar from the inner portion of the fender. I tried a "bug and tar" remover product and it did nothing. I don't want to use anythng that will harm the paint.

Any suggestions?

You may have a problem trying to remove old tar from old paint without harming the paint.
It's going to take a petroleum based product to get the tar off. The paint will be softened also.
Go to your jobber and see what products he reccommends.

Try WD-40. Get off as much as you can then check with an auto paint supply house for wax and grease remover. Be sure the grease remover is made to be used on paint. They have different kinds. The ones meant for bare metal will remove paint.

I found a product that actually worked...

The first bug and tar remover product I tried didn't do anything. I decided I would try another brand before I gave up. I purchased a tar remover made by the Turtle Wax company and it worked great. Some of the tar on my inner fender was almost 1/2" thick. The thick stuff took two applications but it all came off.

Just FYI in case some of you guys also need this. The product comes in a spray bottle (non-aerosol) and was priced at $4.99 at O'Reilly's.
