68squareback Sat Jun 28, 2008 5:47 pm

Hello, my name is jordan and i own a 1968 squareback. I bought a longblock for me squareback now i need to take my old engine out. The only problem is the Bentley service manual says i need to lift my car 3ft in the air, but i don't have a jack or jack stands to go high enough. Do I really need to go that high. Another question I have is where is the rear mounting bracket for the engine.
If anyone can help that would be great
Thank You, Jordan

You do need to get it up at least 30" to be able to slide the engine out from under the car. You need a 3 ton hi/lo floor jack from Harbor Freight ($60) & some jack stands.

at least 30" in the air -- we recently pulled and installed an engine in my square and I have a motorcycle jack that worked excellently for it...

rear mounting bracket for your '68 should be on top of the engine (unless you have an IRS, then the mustache bar should be obvious)

Just do it man... I got mine out just fine with a floor jack and a couple of regular old jack stands. First, put down a peice of plywood big enough for the motor, lower the motor down on a floor jack, then slide the floor jack out ever so carefully. Now your motor is on the plywood which you should be able to slide out from under the car...

as far as mounting bolts... my 68 had four on the tranny and two on the motor mount closest to the back of the car. just look around, you'll find 'em.

I don't know if I would trust a jack from Harbor Freight.

Never crawl under any car just on the jack. Always use jacks stands.
And, BTW, Nothing wrong with Harbor Freight for the hobbiest.
Their stuff will hold up just as long as something you would buy at Autozone or any other parts store.
Most of that stuff is made in China now anyway.

My buddy and I just took out my '69 Fastback engine with his 19" floor jack and some overkill jack stands (they'll go up to 24") and it came out fine - except... the dandy section on automatic transmissions - Bentley (and Chilton too) says "take out the four M 8 bolts that join the torque converter to the drive plate." Those of us who have done this know there are just 3 bolts joining the torque converter to the drive plate. You can count them in all the pictures in the book. Of course we were looking for 8mm heads until we figured out that they're 8mm bolts with 13mm heads.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience.

like at U-Haul they use to put on hitches... that would work great... little steep on the angle I think though
