To the pro's out there, I removed my rear apron on my 61' ragtop today, wasn't too bad, I knew what I was doing but I began to bang out some small dents and straighten some areas, good stuff, question is when welding, how come sometimes I get a good tack weld and others I will burn through. Here's what I'm using, just got it and only practiced a few times. Ya I know, only a few times. I got a Lincoln 140T Mig with 75/25 gas. My settings are 1 on wire speed, first (A) position on heat range, wire is .025 and gas set to @16-18. I know there is a diagram under the lid of the welder but I decided to experiment. I think my technique is wrong, do I hit the tack and let off or hit it and move a bit? What do you guys think? Please give me some good tips, thanks, need to get started on rear bumper brackets next. I'm not looking for a perfect 10 paint job either, just want a good straight car, not going with the expensive paint job either.

I'm no pro, but I can tell you has worked so far for me. Clean bare metal, with a wire brush or cut-off wheel as a grinder, did I say CLEAN?! An auto darkening welding shield. Have the electrode wire touching the CLEAN surface. Don't weld more than 3/8". Grind down weld with cut-off wheel grinder some. If the 'blob' is hollow or has bubbles, the surface wasn't CLEAN! Grind and try again.

You need to turn up the wire speed to about 3-4.
You could probably turn up the heat range too. I know it sounds crazy, but you'll have more metal going to the weld. With practice , you'll get better!

Practice on some scrap until you can pull a consistent bead. Another trick is to back the area you are welding with some copper. A good source is copper pipe from a home improvement store. Cut it length wise and flatten it out. Clamp this to the back side of the seam to help absorb heat. Also make sure there are no gaps any wider then the wire width between the panels on a butt weld.
