A mate came round today in his 62 kombi, I noticed that he had a part I had not seen before .
Its factory welded on the back of his spare wheel section horizontally, its the same as the part welded inside the spare wheel section that holds the spare wheel in but hasnt got a threaded bar.
Has anyone seen one of these, it is factory spot welded in place???

That's funny man. It looks like the factory guy that puts that part on was stoned on put it on the wrong side and w/out the stud. Very cool. Easy fix for him and a cool factory flaw for your buddy.

What's it for? It seems unnecessary.

I would assume you could attach a threaded bar, and it would allow you to hold your tire in place...

No because there is no hole through to the spare wheel area.
So what is it for, cant see any point??

It's a disco ball mount for midgets.
But I am no guru. |

Does it help to attach the pressboard on standards and deluxes?

My 67 Standard does not have it either. Maybe it is something only on australian buses?

Yes, it's commercials only. I figured it was for reinforcement of some sort but I couldn't see any reason why.

I should think the answer is obvious: bungee attachment point for holding cases of beer.

VW didn't do anything random did they? I'm betting it held some special delivery item like cleaner's rack or bread rack in place so it didn't slide.
