I used some 80 grit. As long as the area you are sanding wont be seen, and if you are planning to coat it with something prior to doing the new liner, this works fast. The glue tends to be really dry and flaky cause it is so old - like sanding old paint.

Spray kleanstrip It'll take it down to the metal.
Spray and just use a metal spatula to simply scrape it up.
Or spray it off with water.

I mean it'll take it off. You can get it at wal-mart in the spray can.
Also get the thick chemical type rubber gloves it'll eat thin rubber gloves and will burn the skin.

I tried gasket remover (stripped the paint) and a strong citrus cleaner. I had the best results using the citrus cleaner with a razor blade. Plus, it left behind the paint (that which did not get stripped when I tried the gasket remover).
