The sunshine makes the white look really bright in this picture, but it's not. It's yellowish and streaky. it almost looks like there's a coating of motor oil on it.
Like it or hate it, it turns heads where ever I go. |

Ok Ok.. I can admit when I've made a mistake. I finished that paint job this morning around 11am. I've been out to the garage at least two dozen times since then.... :? I don't like it. it's just a bit too much. I wish it was a lot more faded. I keep looking at it and it's just too colorful. In fact, I wish it wasn't 8pm already because I don't want to irritate my neighbors running the wire cup and power sander for a few hours.
Tomorrow I'll probably strip it off and try something else... |

| So you painted it that scheme and then proceeded to sand it off in an attempt to make fugly patina? |

| I'd have liked it if you didn't patina-it-up. Unique. But whatever man, it's your car. |

| I dig some of the paint but to be honest I am not really going for the spikes and such. Also the gold/copper color toward the rear looks a little too much like spray paint (if you meant it to look like that then sorry it doesn't look right. As for all of the complaints I hope people come to terms with the idea that it's just paint and a custom hood. Not like you went and threw a VonDutch logo on the side of an all original Oval or something. |

Does anyone read previous comments? I said I made a mistake. :x
The deal is that I've been a fan of Ed Roth, Von Dutch and George Barris for years... long before any of these yahoos at the popular night clubs started wearing Von Dutch hats or t-shirts. I've had a flying eyeball tattoo on my forearm for over ten years and I've always admired the hotrod style those guys practically invented. My VW has been the first car that I've been able to try to pay homage to the work they did. If I had the talent to airbrush a really nice graphic on my car I would've. But I don't; and I don't have the cash to pay someone to do it. So I made an attempt to do the best I could. At least I can admit when I made a mistake. It's only a few hours of wasted time, and it's nothing some sanding and primer won't cover.
For those that understood what I was trying to do and appreciated it; Thanks. If you hated it, that's ok too. I only put it in this forum because I was reading other threads on how people "aged" the paint on their rides and thought I would share my process if they asked (butane, orbital, thinner and anything else I could find to beat it up).
As far as other questions; I think that answers the "Why?". And no, it's not Lochness (but it does look like Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc).
Um.. I tried to patina it up because I didn't do a very good job of painting it in the first place, so I tried to camoflage my crappy-ness.
I did not punch the louvered hood myself. I saw a guy selling his rolling chassis with that hood for $500 and just traded him mine.
And lastly I'm not trying to rat-rod my Chrysler 300 because it cost $30K and my VW only cost $1400. |

oh great.. the only thing that is real looks too fake!? The whole backend is just raw metal. It really is rusted slightly, there's no paint back there at all! |

I can't. I'm a teacher and little kids love the spikes. I'd rather make a kid smile than an adult smile anyday. |
