I bought a '54 engine and matching numbers tranny yesterday.. (was listed as a '57, check those numbers twice sellers!!) It had pretty much all the '54/'55 stuff on it... and the strange thing is... much of it was chromed... yes... chromed. Holy Heat Sink Batman!

Anyway.. included was this chromed Round Regulator... Date Coded 11/54, chromed fuel line, carb support, oil breather clip, generator strap, spark plug tube clamps, vaccum advance line... (someone LIKED Chrome!!).. also on it was 53-55 oil breather, and the pulley in the picture below which is probably the most pristine pulley I have ever taken off an engine. No damage at all to the centers, they look brand new and the hub is perfect.. no damage whatsoever. Not sure how they survived in such beautiful condition, but they did. Oh and check out that snazzy chrome 32mm Nut.... with vw symbol. Big Pimpin.. 36hp style.

My question, I have re-read the 54-55 engine thread over and over.. but I am not sure we ever came up with an exact and definitive answer as to when the fat lip (big lip) Pulley was used. Anybody have a date, month and year available off the top of their heads. :)

Just remember David you put Tom and krasa together, when Toms head is to big to fit in a room I'll have to remind the brothers who caused it. :P

Pulley change AFAIK, from the 54-55 thread:

heres some numbers on the big lip pulley:

"from chassis number 1-0722 916 the flange of the outer pulley half is made wider from 10.5mm to 20mm, after the unit is balanced both pulley halves are provided with a paint mark, these paint marks must be aligned when assembling"

apparently the generator and fan assembly was balanced dynamically at 1000 rpms after chassis number -1-0753 096 with a small weight spot welded to the inside flange of the outer pulley half requiring the paint marks to maintain a balanced generator assembly

"to maintain the true running of the dynamically balanced generator/blower unit with safety, the front half of the generator pulley is welded to the pulley hub from chassis number 1-0929 742, the rear pulley half is held in place by lugs of different widths, allowing reinstallation in its original position"

wide lip generator pulley between -1-0722 916 and -1-0929 742 so thats about early Oct. '54 till early Aug '55

my numbers are out of an early repair manual update and not "progressive refinements" funny that they are off from each other by 4 numbers -1-0929 746 vs -1-0929 742

Thanks Bill and Ev for the great info... so the Pulley is correct for my April '55 car... although.... I dont know if Im near pimp enough to run the chrome 32mm nut!! :)

Btw... the engine number that I picked up is 1-0890699 and the case is marked Oct 19th 1954. Tranny comes out at about the exact same time period.

Now all I need is a '54 car to run it in!

Run it all, chrome increases visual horsepower.
