I have not seen a customized Type 34 wagon, but a rendition thereof is available:

Excellent observation, Tram!
I guess the one who made those renditions must reconsider his designs to incorporate the cooling air intakes! |

| If anyone ever gets serious about building one I would suggest looking into adapting an early '60s Valiant or Dart wagon rear roof section. Much closer to Ghia's design sensibility than, say, a Squareback. There was still a real design connection between Ghia and Chrysler into the '60s. |

If I do another Type 34, then next car will be a wagon. Sunroof, ribbed roof like a Nomad, Type 4 engine, 5 speed, lowered a bit, disk brakes. Without having much concern for originality, the sky's the limit, really.
As for cooling, vent the fenders like a Squareback, vent the D pillars, and vent the rear hatch if possible, too.
The rear hatch has been the main sticking point for me. I still haven't found the exact effect I'm looking for using existing metal from another make/model of car.
I don't much like the conceptual drawings I've seen so far, but I do hope someone builds one.

I've been thinking very hard about doing a 34 wagon, with all the best stuff- FI Automatic, A/C, sunroof.
But then, I can only hack up so many VWs so that one will be left to someone else. |

| Yeah the dart wagon back would be sweet with the curved rear corners and maybe a flip down tailgate with the glass going up or maybe rolling down into the tailgate if possible |

| But creating a Type 34 wagon involves a lot of guts! It is a rare vee-dub; henceforth, is it worth doing so? |

Sorry I know this isn't a type 34 wagon, but try to see this, a factory made prototype Fasty Type 34:

You are absolutely right. Ghia worked closely with Virgil Exner in the late 50's and early 60's and there are a lot of similarities between his Chrysler work and what Ghia was putting out as well.
Since Exner lost most of his power at Chrysler after the disastrous 61/62 years, check the big Dart (60-61) or the 61 Fury. They're on a different scale than the T34, of course. There's a picture of the 61 Valiant wagon about 2/3 down the page http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1960-1962-plymouth-valiant5.htm Note that compact Mopar wagons don't have the rear window roll into the roof - that was a GM feature; they roll into the tailgate.
This Fiat prototype is so much like the Type 14 Ghia and the Chrysler D'Elegance show car it's hard to say they weren't evolutions of the same design: http://bringatrailer.com/2008/06/29/rare-vignale-designed-prototype-1953-fiat-1100/
Sorry to ramble; before air cooled VW's, I was/am a Mopar fanatic. One of my first cars was a 1960 Valiant, which was not a Plymouth. |

it's a lot better project for a rusty shell or bondo queen than dumping it or making a funny car, in my opinion. I always like seeing what "might have been" when it's done in a real effort to continue the original design intent, or to recreate a lost prototype. |
