Had asked around before as I thought transplanting the drive line from this ( 71 ) into the 62 would be a good idea.but was told it would'nt work..What actually is it that changed so much that it won't work?

I'm no expert, but I don know that Bays are IRS, and splitties are swingaxle.
I'm speaking to a clued-up friend at the moment about converting my crewcab to '68 IRS. I know that you will lose your RGBs for a start...which will drop you suspension, and affect your gearing. Plus, you need to weld in the IRS control arm brackets.

| So the trans in this will not allow you to use the RGB's? Is this due to size of the Trans.. or how it mounts? |

For a start, Bay' gearboxes uses CV joints...
I know guys swop bug boxes back and forth between s/a and IRS, so perhaps you can change 'em over for your application too?
Why can't you use your original gearbox? |

| It can be done, it has been done, but it isn't a bolt on affair. It also has been talked and discussed about in detail. Do a search in both the forums and the gallery and you'll find all your answers, encouraging as well as discouraging. Good luck! 8) |

While the tranny does not bolt in the same,
the engine will bolt in.
You may need to swap clutches, and of course use the splitty air cleaner. There may be another thing or two about swapping the motor in. Hmm, if the '62 is 6V then that. This has been asked before, so I am sure a thread out there has more answers. |

the transmission will not fit correctly, so you have to cut away the frame horns. then there is nothing to support the transmission/engine, so you have to weld a hanger mount onto the back. by this time, you have majorly screwed up the bus, so you will lose interest and try to sell it.
if you must have IRS, use a beetle tanny and it is mostly bolt on, and no cutting required. still more work than making the correct RGB tranny work.
the engine will bolt up fairly easily though. |
