I feel i have been blessed that I have not really ever had electrical problems in any of my bugs. I have a basic idea where most of the main stuff is like the harness that goes in the roof etc. but never really had to play with any of it,. I usually just wind up marking wires and points and reconnecting them where they were... anywho....
Does anybody have a pic or diagram of where the rear, stop, turn, tail lights wires are in the interior of the car?
I am going to be wiring it up for a trailer this week and did not want to spice them in the fenders or housings etc. They must be in the back under the driver side rear cushion right? OH this is a 1971 beetle. I am going to install a powered tail light converter so I don't place any extra loads on the vehicle electrical system allowing me to run extra clearance lights on my trailer and also utilize a standard 4flat wiring scheme for it as well.
Any suggestions? |

The tail light wiring harness's are under the tar board sides in the engine compartment on each side... There is a plastic "junction" connector on each side.
You can sort of get an idea of how the wiring is run from this picture...

Yes, the main harness runs along the drivers side ( USA spec LHD) and under the rear seat by the voltage regulator ( through 74) and over the rear wheel well "hump" and back into the engine compartment... BUT if you follow my advice you will /should just tap into the connectors in the sides of the engine compartment...
You can do it there using crimp on spade connectors and wire extensions to the existing harness/junction blocks ( I have done it several times) and not cut into or mess up the original wiring harness in any way... your trailer wire "rig" could be pulled out and the harness put back to stock in minutes... if you choose to cut into/hack into LOL the wiring harness in the interior of the car then go for it... it is your car. |

keifernet is 100% right. Engine compartment behind side tarboard. You can do it all on the left side I believe. There is a T4 connector and the right signal light wire passes by it as well. Here are the colors>
