1973 MELLOW YELLOW Wed Jul 02, 2008 12:00 pm

Hi there

My parnents own a super original RHD UK Oval over here in England! I noticed when they got the car that it had Duro glass fitted all round and I assumed that over its 54 years on the road that someone had simply replaced the Sekurit big logo glass! However after trauling through the For sale section I have noticed that some people are selling the same glass as original?

Is it possible that this glass is original?

It would be great to no because if it is then they are in amazing condition!

Cheers!

I have wondered the same about my Oct. 53 Oval. The front windshield is Delog, the vent wings are large Sekurit, the roll up door windows are Duro-Glas, passenger side window is large Sekurit, drivers side window is Duro-Glas and the rear window is Duro-Glas. Original?

Both Sekurit (Big & little logos) and Duro Glass are OG.
Sigla I believe is a replacement from the old days.

However, I don't know when the change from big SEKURIT to Sekurit happened...

As long as that DURAGLAS logo is in large font, it's era correct.

Every single pane of glass in my Sept '53 (original British-market RHD) has DURO-GLAS etched into it (note the capital letter font and hyphen in the middle) and I have no doubt that it is all-original.

my '55 had all DURO-GLAS, I have an early April '54 which is all large logo SEKURIT, my later September '54 has the two line Sekurit with ~~~~ AS-2 and a DURO-GLAS back window, it seems like they used whatever they had at the time

Good luck finding a new one!
But since it's a flat one you can have one cut and then a logo like this one reproduced... just don't tell VWoA!

Does Progressive Refinements mention Duraglass? And anyway, where can I get a copy?

Ok, here is a picture of the Delog logo on my Oct. 53 Oval. Is this the original windshield?

My Canadian October '53 has large logo SEKURIT D-02 in everything but the front window...............That is Sigla safety glass as required by that date.

Joey, that Delog glass in your '53 looks suspicious because it seems to be installed inside out, usually the logo is readable from the outside? Do you know if your '53 is a real USA sold new car or a later import, usually the USA cars had the "Made in Germany" tag under the body number in front, that Delog logo just looks a bit too new for a '53 to me, I would suspect it is a later replacement but looks oval era anyway, those early AS1 windshields get very brittle when they are old too so if you ever decide to replace that seal be VERY careful

Hey Bill,

My car is a Euro model and was not brought over untill '58. I have done research on the original owner and he was in Mainz(were the car was originally delivered) from 53 to 58. Is it possible that the windshield was installed backwards? Was that Delog mark used in 53?

well, that pretty much makes it a replacement for sure if it was a later euro import, theres no way an AS1 glass would have been installed in a euro car before it got to the USA, I don't even think AS1 was legal in europe back then? it was probably installed as soon as it got to America, and was probably put in inside out back then as well, I know in Pennsylvania for the anual safety inspections they had to check to make sure all glass in the car was USA safety glass even back in the 1950s, I'm sure whoever installed the glass was used to seeing the logo on the drivers side as it usually is but your windshield just has the logo on the right lower inside, that Delog just looks like an acid etched logo to me which makes it later than '53, I think all the early '50s logos were sand blasted and the edges of the letters were not as sharp
