I really like the look of the type 3 fastback but I've never been in one and I have no idea how they drive. So I was wonderng if anyone in So Cal near Rancho Cucamonga will be willing to show me their type 3 and maybe take me for a ride. Since I can't really go to the local VW dealer and check one out. lol
Thanks in advance. |

| Why don't you try driving one that you are interested in buying? |

Trust me they are much better than a bug in both comfort and handling. The Type 3 was designed to replace a bug with more comfort more room more style. I for some reason HA HA would pick a Fastback over any other ACVW. But then again oh well just drive the one your looking at and you will see what your missing out on. Just my 2 cents |

As posted, they are more stable than a Bug but still a little skittish on the freeway, especially in crosswinds, compared to a modern or heavier car. Better ride than bugs, and wider for more legroom, too.
But you will also find at this age, the individual car condition will mean more than the generic model differences. Tires, ball joints, tie rods, bearings, steering gear, alignment, bushings... all these make a vast difference and will vary car to car depending on condition.
So I doubt you can learn very much from a test drive of a car other than the one you buy. If the "test" car is restored well, it will tell you how good they are capable of being, but not how YOURS will be, at least without considerable work. |

I would restore a type 3 or atleast keep it alive before I would a bug. There are many folks on here that will go out of their way to assist you That I am sure of. |

This is exactly what I'm trying to accomplish; took the words out of my keyboard. |

I'm still looking for someone with a well-sorted type 3 willing to show me their car. So that I can see what a good type 3 is like. So if you have a properly running type 3 and you are willing to show it to me, let me know. I'll top of your gas tank and buy you lunch/dinner/beer.
Thanks

You can drive my square if I can drive your Lotus.
Just kidding, I'm about an hour away, and my steering is loose. I'm sure you can find a better candidate nearer you, I wish you luck, Type 3s are a great car. |

Indeed. Though it'd certainly be nice to drive an Esprit, my age = not up to par.
P.S. my car runs quite nicely, but the tie-rods are shot, and I should replace my three old balljoints and lube the beam, before I adjust the box. |

If you want to take a drive this weekend out to Hacienda Heights, you can drive one of my '62s, albeit, it's a stock car. They tend to handle better when a little closer to the ground, but fun to drive nonetheless. We can go out to a local 50's diner for lunch if you like. I'm about 30 minutes away from Rancho.

My Uncle used to give me the keys to his 56 Corvette 265/AT or his 65 El Camino 327/Muncie 4 speed when I was 17! One fast truck that could get 3rd gear rubber at about 60mph?. I guess my Uncle just lucky I always brought them back in one piece! My Dad scared my Mom one day romping down on the 265/AT on wet pavement! |
