I'm ready to spend a few hundreds on parts for my 72 Super. In your opinion what would be a good place to buy parts for it?

I know of places like West Coast Metric, BFY, California JBugs and Midamerica. I would like to save myself some shipping time and drive to Midamerica (It's 2 Hrs from where I live) What do you guys think?

How much will gas cost to drive 4 hours round trip?

Buy from Wolfsburg West and get quality parts.

2002sportside Thu Jul 03, 2008 8:43 am

By my estimate, about $32...

My partial list once again...

Wolfsburg West
Bughaus
Airhead Parts
CIP1
CB Performance
Aircooled.net

Wolfsburg West ships fast so you should have your parts before you know it. Stick to a place that sells quality stuff so you don't have to come back on here and complain about the junk later.

Go check the feedback forum for opinions on vendors, should help shed some light.

YOu guys forgot oeveedub.com.

2002sportside Thu Jul 03, 2008 12:22 pm

I always forget oeveedub because they don't carry a ton of products. But I have had good luck with what I did buy there.

And I did say partial

WOW..None of you guys mentioned Midamerica.... Why is that??

Because they're a more expensive version of JC Whitney.

Glossy catalogs are expensive to produce and mail.

Because he said he was looking for a good part supplier.

They send a new catalog every two weeks, who do you think pays for that?

Thank you guys, this is going to be my first attempt to fix and preserve my grandpa's Beetle, I really appreciate your input. I will definitely come back here for more advice

Very annoying..... to get catalogs.

A new catalog every 2 weeks helped put Rockey Mountain Motorworks out of business.

Bummer because they were pretty decent and had good prices.

2002sportside Thu Jul 03, 2008 7:44 pm

I don't even look at MAM's new catalogs anymore. It used to be they had 'new products' in the front, not anymore. Now I just pull off the rear cover and throw the rest in the recycle bin.

I miss Rocky Mountain Motorworks. I spent quite a bit of money there when I owned my first beetle. Used to have to call on the phone, always got a helpful person. They had good parts, fair prices, fast shipping... Being in CO they were quicker to the east coast too. I also liked that they used VW part numbers. I used to have an old catalog lying around, but I think they are all gone...

Their demise is one of the reasons I avoid MAM...

VochoFan75 Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:08 pm

For my first purchase I am looking to get shock inserts, the strut covers and the rubber stops, front brake hoses and a driver side window regulator. Wolfsburg West will be my first choice because once you choose the area you want to find parts for they have this super handy diagram and you only have to click on the numbers to get the right part....GENIUS!

I agree that getting a new catalog every two weeks from MAM is kinda annoying, it reminds me of a pushy salesperson at Best Buy, I work on sales and pushing people is not always a good idea, sometimes you make a good sale but people won't come back, but if someone comes in for a $5 part an you treat them right they will remember that when they are ready to drop $500, I also agree that it can't possibly be profitable to print and send out all those catalogs (I used to work at a place that designs, prints and sends similar ones, Glossy is NOT cheap by any means)

Unless like you say the parts they sell are marked up to justify the catalogs.

I am sure someone in here will be nice enough to tell me how to install the window regulator once I get it (the door panels are already off)

THANKS!

For super beetle suspensions, check out Topline. All they do is supers...

My VW mentor (multiple Hot VW cars) once said as I was getting ready to drive away from his shop after we replaced all of the chrome crap the PO installed (I still need one of Glenns dizzys) was to throw away all catalogs and drive the damn car. I still have to pry the "cheapy" catalog out of grlfriends hands (she prys the Victoria Secrets out of mine) same deal I guess. She thinks this and that will look good on the bug and I think this and that would look on the bugs 8)

2002sportside Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:20 pm

Nah, you just keep the right catalogs. The ones to keep are the ones you have to request, not the ones that come weekly...

**edit. You can't go wrong with one of Glenn's distributors. Nice piece :D

Even the ones you request you have to wonder where the parts are made and my girl actually imports (crap) from China....please don't tell her  , Glenn is out of stock and I don't have a rebuildable core right now (PO..009 chrome..crap...) I want one of Glenns so it can run great.

2002sportside Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:42 pm

At the moment the only one I have handy is Wolfsburg West's catalog...

Keep checking the classified section for a rebuildable core, they are out there. I just bought an 019 off Glenn, but I'm looking for another one to have rebuilt. Just need to get it cheap enough to make it worth it...
