I had no isea there was such a thing and I'll be 45 this month and consider myself pretty informed. I don't want to get into whether it was wrong or right but to agree to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" and then doing that shows she has a lack of character and credibility. Knowing she'd done that would keep me from ever asking her to sing for an event I was putting on.
But before this who actually knew ther was a "Black National Anthem" in America?

July 1, 2008: Rene Marie sings the lyrics of the 'Black National Anthem' to the tune of the 'Star-Spangled Banner.'
A jazz singer shocked some Denver residents after replacing the words to the national anthem with those of the "Black National Anthem" during the annual State of the City address this week.
Rene Marie was asked to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper delivered the annual address on Tuesday. Instead, she sang the lyrics of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" — a hymn commonly referred to as the "Black National Anthem" — to the tune of the national anthem, MyFOXColorado.com reported.
"If anyone has got a right to be angry it's probably me," Hickenlooper told the station. "I guess what I feel most is just deeply disappointed."
The mayor said only Marie, her husband and a musical adviser knew what the local jazz singer had in mind.
"What she said was that she was very sorry, that she meant no disrespect, that she was trying to make a creative expression of her love for the country," Hickenlooper said.
But the change in lyrics angered many residents, including City Councilman Charlie Brown.
"I was mad," he told MyFOXColorado.com. "I almost walked off the stage."
Brown said the matter needs to be addressed. "There is no substitute for the national anthem."

I'm sure most are still at work GOAT. But some might think it's a black thing and that's not it. For that matter think of her as white it's no biggie. My thought was WHO KNEW?
As far as what she did that's like hiring a clown troupe to entertain the kids in the auditorium and some clowns coming in and doing hardcore porn. Either instance I'm sure would be quite the shocker.(no pun intended) :D |

| Everything else aside, if you get invited to sing at a public event by the mayor, the least you can do is tell him if you are going to change the program. Really bad judgment on her part if nothing else. |

Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on 'til victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land. |

Maybe were looking at this the wrong way. I live in Atlanta and all of the blacks that I work with (not sure if thats the right word black) think its time for change. As they have told me look at what the white man has done don`t you think its time for a black man? I think I`m open minded and try to see both sides but who is to say ? But as far as a Black National Anthem that was nothing but wrong.
PS. Fox News and all the others are not doing this country any good. |

Lift yo voice and sang,
'Til earth and heaven b rang'n,
Ring wit da fly beats of Liberty;
Let ur rejoicizzle risizzle
High as the wu tang clan,
Let it be bang'n loud as da roll'n sea.
bust a rap full da faith dat the oppres'n whity taught us,
bust a rap full da hope that obama be bring'n us;
look'n da murn sun of da day begun,
Let us riot on 'til victory is won.
faded on da road we trod,
Bitter da danky blunt is gone,
Felt in dem days when homie had died;
kickn it with a steady beat,
damn we be havn some weary feet
chill down da place for which our fathers got high
We come over a way from down south where its hotter,
We come, wit ur chirn dragn hieneken thru water,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright teeth is cast. |

Ah, white guilt at work. Why do you even ask if it's "right"? It shouldn't matter, now should it. |

well, not to make this political but they are right. it is time for change, change of thinking, change of the way we handle foriegn policy,change of the way we take care of our own country.... change of a lot of things !!!
I could care less if the new president is black/white/yellow/red/brown/male/female/gay/straight/transexual or a mixture of all of them!! as long as we can start down a road of bringing this wonderful country back down a path that it was built on. |

As a Coloradoan, Here is more info:
1. Singing at the state of the City address is an honor, and uncompensated.
2. The City Councilman that was interviewed called it inappropriate, and he is black.
3. The Governor of Colorado has said it was inappropriate.
4. Barack Obama said it was inappropriate.
5. The singer said she would do it again. (No apology coming) |

makes no difference if its a rich black man or a rich white man... nothing will change for the better.
if we're white, they're black. that would be the right term. i don't now why everyone uses 'african-american'. i'd be offended if i was a jamacan-american and someone called me african american. :lol:
as carlin said.. word have no meaning by themselves. you can change a name but it's still the same situation. |
