I just got this item in via UPS today:
https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-113-798-074

Now here is the situation... everything works fine, but the 'return spring' on my car wasn't all that it was supposed to be. I had read a few threads and some research here explained to me the basics.

The problem, however, is that I'm not really sure how to remove the old pin at the base of the gas pedal, and its pretty corroded. The pedal works fine but the post that apparently slides in from the driver-side doesnt want to just slide/pull out.

Any help here is appreciated. I already replaced the roller and it is/was fine. Now I really just want to remove/replace the shaft-pin at the base of the pedal so that I can also slide in the new return spring. HELP!

Hmm. You might just have to drill out that sucker. That is one spot which really gets corroded - like its welded! When you drill it our, use a smaller bit that the pin size, center punch it and try to keep it inline. You can use a few drops of oil now and then.

SOAK it in PB Blaster and see if it loosens up any. If not, you may have to drill it out...

Is this kit what you need to fix it when your gas pedal keeps tilting to the right and off of the roller?

Just did mine. Take the pedal assembly out. Pound the old one out with an old screw. It'll come out...

jzjames, which spot is the trouble spot where it gets really bad, do you know?

I really don't want to have to remove my pedal cluster. Let me rephrase that... just to fix this spring it is not worth it to me to completely remove the pedal cluster. I've only had the pedal fall off the roller 2x ... y'know!?

I'll try some PB Blaster when I get over my folk's place today. That is where I keep my good tools / chemicals, right next to my dad's 2-post lift. ;)

I would recommend pulling out the assembly too. As stated above it gets welded in, and it is in a difficult position to get out while in the car. You can't drive the pin out with a hammer and punch from the left side because the pin will be stopped by the tunnel.

I unfortunately tried to wrestle it out with a vice grips and a pry bar, and ended up breaking off one of the tabs. This resulted with a new problem and had to buy a replacement assembly.

Fortunately the replacement assembly only cost me $2.00 at a swap meet.

Does anyone have any pictures of what is involved to remove and reinstall the pedal cluster/assembly then? That is NOT the route I want(ed) to go and still may not. But if someone can point me in the direction of some details so I can know what all is involved, that'd be good. Thx!

You need to create some slack on the cables first. Loosen the clutch cable adjustment and the accelerator cable. The pedal cluster is bolted to the tunnel with two bolts. Remove them and pull the cluster away. Remove cables.

Hardest part is getting the cables to stay on the cluster when you reinstall it. If you have a helper or two that can pull on them while you put the cluster back in, you will be golden.

I am going off memory here. The Bentley should have a more detailed procedure, if you have one.

Here is another question or two...

#1 - What holds that pin in place after you slide it thru?

and

#2 - Which way is it supposed to slide in/out?

What I was thinking is that maybe I would dremel/cut it out and then it might slide out easier, right? Then I could just slide the new one in more easily. But if it ONLY slides in from the passenger side then as noted above, the tunnel would interfere.

Thoughts?!

i think this problem is usually from the actual pedal metal being fatigued or bent or gone at the bottom where it attaches to the pedal assembly or the pin is partially loose... and by the way i found the aftermarket pedal i bought was much thinner metal than original and i fixed up my original rather than putting the NEW POS on

2 bolts and the clutch cable are the only things holding the pedal assembly in. Have someone step on the clutch while you insert a broom stick into the rear wheel well to hold the lever in place. This will give you max slack and you won't have to mess with that wing nut. Getting the clutch cable back on the hook end at the pedal is a pain, but it's doable. Once it's out, hose the whole thing down with WD40. Your clutch and brake pedal will move alot smoother when you're done.

I don't remember which way I drove the pin out, but the new one is a tight fit too, so it won't fall out. It think it goes in from the brake side since the pin is rounded on the tunnel side. I also found that the pedal return spring needed to have more spring to actually lift the pedal up. The roller in the kit needed to be reamed a little so it would spin freely.

I think the pedal is original but I'll take a look at the base of the assembly and see if I can figure out what's going on.

Today's big accomplishment was taking the front brakes apart to clean everything up and free up the frozen adjusters, I now have a firm high pedal again!
