I have been reading for a while but this is my first post. I have a 69 bug and want to put a 66 deck lid on it. I like the look better and am not concerned with keeping an original look, obviously. What I am wondering is, if I put a 66 rear apron on to fit the deck lid, will the apron fit properly between the fenders. I have seen that 66 fenders are different than 69, but I didn't know if the shape of the part that bolts to the body was the same, thus allowing the apron to fit properly. Also, will the top of the 66 deck lid fit properly to the 69 body? Is there any other problem I am not thinking of? Maybe the hinges won't match up? The welding is not a problem.

should fit fine.

The fenders are pretty much the same, only two holes are different and they are at the front end of the fender. one of the body bolt holes is in a different location. I have put 66 fenders on a 70 before.

IF you weld in the earlier apron it will fit... BUT you will have some bumper bracket/fender issues depending on what your planning on running... late fenders with "adaptor" bracket for the early blade would be the easiest.
