View original topic: Escras on a 73 412....help me?

OK, want to run the 17x7 Escras on my 412. That being said I'd need to run an adapter. The ones I have found are 1/2" thick. The wheels are ET42.

The 412 is lowered a little all the way around, but more so in the front.

Any ideas on if it can be done?

Please respond to DocLong@hotmail.com.

I'm in Iraq and making it to the samba is RARE.

Your 42 et is 1.65" positive offset and adding a 1/2 adapter changes the et to 30 or a positive offset of 1.18".
That adapter pushes the wheel outboard 1/2"
A 7" rim is actually 8" wide, and the stock VW wheel 4 1/2 J 15 is about 5" wide.
What I don't know, but the et may be stamped on your stock VW wheel.
You can measure and determine the et of a stock wheel, and then start playing with the numbers.
Once you have the numbers you can mock up the wheels & tires by assembling a wood template.
You can use the template to besure your stuff fits before you drop long green on wheels & tires.
A 17 x 7 set up is a "plus 2" and you need to figure out what size tires to buy too.

My guess is without narrowing the track somehow you will be 1.5 to 2" too wide based on the et & being 2" wider than stock.

I replied to Doc via e-mail, but let me just tell you the Type 4 is a totally different animal than most VW people are used to dealing with. The wheelwells are quite large. The front track cannot be easily narrowed- these are unibody cars with strut suspension. It is possible a 17 x 7" ET30 setup might work, but would require some careful measurement or mocking up. Somebody in the UK has run 18x8" Porsche wheels in the front with adapters, and I'm thinking about the largest ET they could have ended up with total would be around 40, so you can see my logic here.
