Cannot figure out how this setup is supposed to work.

I know the engine thermostat operates the cable but, what is the purpose of the 'formed" spring on the cable end that attaches to the flap lever?

When the engine is cold, should this spring be contracted or expanded?

Can anyone explain it's operation - how the setup controls the flap, etc.?

Also any indication or pointers as to it's correct installation would be appreciated?

I believe as the car heats the thermostat expands and pulls down on the rod and in turn opens the shutters.

No... as the car heats the thermostat expands and pushes the rod up opening the shutters - and in turn pulling the cable so that the preheat air is blocked by the flap allowing only "cool" air to come through the air cleaner into the carb.

At this point the formed spring on the cable should be, or look "expanded".

A cold engine should have the preheat flap in the open position and the cable's spring should be coiled tight.

maybe someone else can offer a clearer explanation of how this device works and how it should be set up.

jim Yes that post is precisely the one that got me thinking about how this setup is supposed to work but neither there nor on the post linked there ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=226969&highlight=shutter ) is there really an explanation given.

I guess the cable does pull and the spring returns the flap to closed - right?

I'd like to be able to get mine working correctly.

The Bentley page 16 in the fuel chapter tells how to adjust the cable.
