i am going to send my 73 in for paint within the next week, the body is straight, very little rust. how much would i expect to pay for a complete inside and out job?

Depends on if it's stripped or a complete car.

pretty much stripped mine down with exception of the doors... paid 1500, BUT, i am having to sand and buff out the orange peel. Decent paint job though.

A guy owed me a favor, I bought the paint and he applied it after sanding the body and mending some dings. Paint cost me 135 bucks after tax (included thinner, etc.).

There are some fisheyes, so you get what you pay for I guess.

I did the prep work myself. Took the fenders off, sanded and primed the enitre exterior of the car, removed all trim, hardware, windows and seals. Drove it to Macco (yes laugh) but they did a pretty good job for @ $500.00. I priced some local shops that quoted from $2000-$4000 but then I would be afraid to drive it anywhere. You do get what you pay for sometimes.

I've heard of more than a few people who have done exactly what you did and got excellent results from Macco. It tends to come out even better if you meet the guy who is doing the painting and buy him some beer to drink after the job is done.

A member of our club recently did a ground up restoration on his car. The car was stripped bare, and brought to the shop as a shell, not even the pan. It was pretty straight to start with but needed a little work on the roof and a few other parts. I believe he paid about 5k for all the body work and paint, including wet sanding and buffing. Top notch job.

The key is finding a Maaco who has a good painter on staff. They do exist!

The key to a good paint job is:

1) Prep
2) Materials / booth
3) Skill of the person laying it down

If you have decent quality in all three, you'll end up with a decent paint job.

We prepped and sprayed my rally car in a friends CNC shop. The prep was done over a few weeks, detailed and careful. The paint was layed over two days using high quality PPG paint. If I were to spend the time wet-sanding the car, it would look top-notch. Since it is going to get destroyed by gravel, I just don't care. If we can lay a pretty darned good paint job in a CNC shop using a $99 gun...you can get an awesome paint job at a Maaco. Just need good prep and a painter who knows what they're doing.

p.s. Rally car job cost me $130 in materials, and about a week of my time.

If your making a show car, pay someone to do it right. If your making a daily driver, do it yourself. I had a friend with all the equipment and know how. He showed me how to paint the car and I had no experience. It cost me $200 (paint, primer, sand paper, etc.). I did all the prep work. I used a single-stage polyurethane and it turned out better than I could have hoped for. It also gave me a special connection with my car.

The PO of my 1969 car had a Maaco job done for $650. By good painting standards, it is a horrible job. But for the daily driver it will be, it is fine for now. But I will redo it at some point.

What about the Duplicolor Paint Shop system? (http://www.duplicolor.com/products/paintshop.html) I was thinking of trying this out on my '66...

Show car...$4500. yep thats right. I had it matched to the Chey metallic blue and a Cannadale Moutain bike. Lots of pearl and metal flake. It changes color in the sun, from black to blue to purple and teal green, but its now that Cameleon paint. Its the labor that makes it cost so much.

$ 3-5 K seems to be what i ran into for a professional paint job at a shop with prep but not much body work.

also found a guy who could do it for $1000 at a "rent a booth" place locally

dont know about $130 for materials . when i painted my ghia i remember it being much more... about 100 bucks for a gallon of paint.. i used 1.5 and should have used 2 then there was hardener and reducer was more like $350 for all.

regardless of where it is painted the biggest thing is prep.. all paint jobs will look good when they are done but the clincher is how it looks year 3..5 ..8

thats when that spec of rust left on becomes a bubble of rust and the nicks you put in it putting your fenders on start to show themselves in full glory and the bondo cracks and poor welding start to become proud.. unfortunatley i know this from experience.

Had one done at Macco a while ago, I pulled all the glass, and sanded/preped the car myself. Talked to the painter and gave him half of a $50 (50 dollar bill ripped in half) and told him if he did a good job the other half was his when I picked it up. It turned out great.

Would have sucked if it didn't turn out great because I doubt you would have seen the other half of that $50 bill again.
