View original topic: Is a Sunroof Sedan heavier?
Bruce Fri Jul 04, 2008 11:58 pm

Here's a pic of the weights of my Jan 51 11C non-sunroof sedan:

And this Sunroof sedan's tag:

The Unloaded Weight (Leergewicht) of the sunroof car is listed at 10kg more (740 vs. 730kg).
Is this true for all Sunroof sedans compared to a regular sedan of the same year?
If this is true, it sure makes it difficult to fake all the different weights.

It is a sedan with a sunroof.

It would make sense. A cabriolet weighs much more than a hardtop.

I'd be surprised if, the mechanism, extra strength aroung the opening and layers of sunroof material, didn't weigh more that a single skin of sheet metal.

I think this one looks fishy.

From 52-53 og VW workshop manual

the workshop manual looks like its wrong, and there seems to be a way to tell if a plate has been faked from a C to a G, 10 extra Kg would make sense with all the extra channels, canvas, cross bows and header bow that sounds about right, that and having PHILLIPS SCREWS holding a 195O number tag on ...

also note that both of the heavier car tags say 10/12 G (E) and the lighter car tags say 10/11 C

Those are both mine, both sunroofs, but different years. The years don't seem to be the same on the tags you posted Bruce.

12Gs are '51 and ups I believe, 11s '50.

And someone noticed the PHILLIPS HEAD screws huh? Imagine that, some detail oriented people nit-picking someone else's car.........

{I didn't restore it, and it has its share of other issues, trust me... many of which I am fixing/fixed over time......}

Sorry to mention the screws John, didnt know it was your car
so both your cars are real sunroofs? that kind of blows that theory unless they just used heavier steel different months of the year on and off?

My June '52 standard ID plate says 10/11 A , I also checked the Max weight on my '55 sunroof tag and its listed as 1110 Kg , the same as the Split Standard ID plates 1110 Kg, the Standard is obviouslly way lighter than the deluxe oval sunroof , very curious

the oval does not list the cars empty weight but the standard split is also stamped 730 Kg empty same as a deluxe, it has to be lighter though

Yes, both of mine are originals, I have the import papers to prove it...
