Hello,
I just bought a 1966 squareback. I need some information on a correct hitch for squareback. I need to buy an original hitch. The rear bumper has a small cut out that was used for a hitch. The hitch was removed by a previous owner. The part number for the hitch started with ZVW 311 something like that. Any information you have is appreciated and if you have a hitch for sale, let me know.
Thanks! |

| We never had to cut the bumper for the factory style hitches. This is something someone else has done or it was another manufacturers hitch. |

Interesting! On the original service invoice, it mentioned please remove the hitch part ZVW 311 ------ from the car and this was in 1967. Apparently the car came with original hitch when first nought in 1966 and the owner wanted the hitch removed in 1967. I will need to check out the car when I pick up the car on July 20. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks! It's the same as the valley hitch I have. It's just the bar with with hitch part welded on and the two plates that screw to the body to give it the additional strength.

| hey neil, does the second hitch you show have the same max tongue weight as the valley unit? i can't read that in the picture? I have 2 of these as well, one with the extra bracing plates. when i get home tomorrow i'll see if either are the valley version or not. interesting that they only want the T.W. to be 8 % of the overall trailer weight. |

| Thanks for the photos. Do you have to cut out a small hole on the bumper? Mine has a small square hole for the tongue to stick out on the bumper. |

Not on the ZVW hitch.
The ZVW hitch was an American built unit sold by VWoA. Made in the USA. |

Brian,
The ZVW says max 1080 lbs, 88 lb tongue, the valley is 1000 lbs, 88 lb tongue. |

Here's the U.S. Patents for the hitch for Type 3.

This other Type 3 hitch might be what you had.

WOW, I picked up one like this, that the guy I got it from told me it was for a dune buggy. I didn't know it was a t-3 hitch. |

I tow with mine all the time. Just follow the factory recommendations. When installing the hitch i had to upgrade the factory bumper bolts with longer ones. But that was about it. I did not have to cut anything from the bumper. Maybe your bumper was tweaked? or maybe just the guy who installed it.
I work at uhaul and our instructions for hitches alot of time will recommend cutting the bumper or valence and alot of the time no cutting is needed, I always make sure you have to cut something before i cut. Someone else may just follow the instructions and do it that way.
If you want to see pics of my square with u-haul trailers check out my photos. |
