Does anyone know what kind of tool i need to take the bolts out of the cv axles with, on my 74 bug. i tried a t40 star pattern socket and it was too small. i also tried a t45 but it was too large. I noticed that it had more than 5 splines in the bolt but i cant find a tool that fits it.

KD Tool racks at the parts stores will have them. They are not Torx. they are a 12 point star spline wrench.
I can't find my KD one right now to give you the number.

When you do get the correct tool for the bolts, be sure to clean out the recess prior to using it. There will be dirt and road crud in there preventing the part from seating enough to get a good bite on the bolt.
Good luck,
David

Get a KD or Snap-om. They will last a lifetime, the cheap ones will strip and twist and you'll bust a knuckle.

What he said... The cheaper ones are 'disposable.' I went through two taking the CV Joints out...

I got mine at the local Car Quest store. It came in a set of 4 from Lisle.
