If studs wont come out, then do not take them out.... Run a thread die down threads to chase them (clean them) and reuse them... You never need to remove studs and replace with new unless threads are so damaged you can not get nut on them, they are too short, or broken off....

To change them for sake of changing them is probably going to cause you more grief than you want.... Its another case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...

And What if they do break off? Like the one i broke today? Then what do you do?

there is a few things you can do... it depends on where it broke off at (how far off the head or in it) if it is exposed an ok amount then you could vice grip it or you can weld a scrap pice of metal to it so it makea a handle of sorts on the stud. if its broken flush or in the head then a good drill bit a good easy out and some careful drilling will do it.

I do a lot of head rebuild work.
I have a jig that I made, that is a drill pilot for drilling right on center. I drill a small pilot hole first, and then a tap drill hole. If the threads are too mangled, then I go on out to heli-coil size.

the shank of the bolt is sticking out some. enough to get vicegrips on it. I have been applying penatrating oil a few times a day for the last 2 or 3 days. it broke yesterday. Can i heat up the head with a torch (not alot, just some) to expand the head metal, making the bolt easier to remove? Or will it expand in all directions, thus tightening its grip on the bolt?

i dont think it would do any damage to try it? some one might know better but the heads get hot anyway right? id say give it a warm up and try to pull it out!

actually grab your propane and get that sucker hot, all of a sudden it will come out super easy. the aluminum grows faster than the steel, and looses its grip on the stud. thats why I walways tack weld a nut on the end of the stud if it breaks, casue the nut iseasy to turn, and the heat from welding frees it right up, you can grab it with your fingers.

well, you can grab it once, htne it burns you and you are done working for a bit. wanna guess how I know this?
