Alright, so I figure that my '63 was a Septemer '62 build foin' by my VIN.
Now what I was wondering was about options or accessories for my car. Would my car more than likely have had a hood crest? It has chrome trim inside that appears to be OG. ( or at least the clip holes ) Did the American standard model have that or Deluxes. The reason for asking is I am about to get a full resto on it and want trim, etc. to be year correct. any insight is appreciated. Thank you. |

Your car may still have the crest. It continued until sometime in October (if memory serves). US imported VWs were only Deluxes, which had body and dash trim. As a Deluxe, it would have also had leatherette instead of cloth seats and a full headliner. |

| Sept. '62 still has the crest for all US import cars. Crest dropped Oct. '62 at VIN 5010448. |

My 63 (built 5/24/63) does not have the Wolfsburg Hood Crest so yours must have been made earlier then May 63, like you said September 62. I’ve been thinking about adding a Crest to mine just because they add a little something to the looks. I was thinking of using a magnet to stick it on with. I would put the magnet inside the trunk lid and attach the Crest to the outside over the magnet. This would avoid drilling any holes and it wouldn’t be permanent, keeping it original. What do you think?
I’m always looking for the brother/sister of my 1963.
Which, according to the by Birth Certificate, Oscar was built May 24th 1963, left the factory on
May 30th 1963 and arrived at Oliver Imported Cars in Berkeley California a few weeks later.
It was purchased by the original owner in August of 1963.
The VIN number is 5559673, what VIN number is your 63? |

Aha! So it wasnt just the deletion of the beloved Wolfsburg crest that changed. The hood went from 4-tab to three-tab with the raised pedistal for the VW emblem. Very cool info :) !
(hmmm :-k .... I think I may have known that but forgot  ) |

Yes,unless your 63 has a steering column lock like mine. then you would have a seperate key for locking column and 1 for doors. |

| Well, here's one thing I have question on - what type of heater vents do you have under the bak seat. I ask becaue I know that the 1962 setup carried over a little ways into 1963, with two small oval outlets near the tunnel fed from a single hose coming off the heater pipe next to the battery. Then they changed to two large round heater outlets, each going to a separate Y pipe left and right and hand-operated open/close flaps on them, nearer the doors, on the kick panels. |

| I would imagine he has the earlier set-up. That was a mid-Dec '62 change. I don't have access to any references right now, but I'm thinking it's coincident with the introduction of the fresh-air 40 around VIN 5200000. |
