the problem is my rusted, crud covered oily mess called a 1.9 has been there since I've owned it and whenever I try to repair or clean it something falls apart..literally, every time
this past weekend I decided to try to clean it with simple green and a parts brush and of course, something broke
the quarter-sized black plastic cover for the flywheel (I'm guessing)
Is there a better, safer way to get my engine clean or should I just leave it alone?
all suggestions are welcome
thanks

A search on <engine cleaning> procures this nice previous thread:

Whenever I go to the car wash (once a week), I use about 1 minute of high pressure rinse time and hit the engine and transmission bottom.

As to the top side, I use about a half roll of paper towels and a bottle of 409 and had clean as much as I can. This allows me to "touch" as many parts, fastners, and hoses, which also allows me to inspect for any potential failure.

Been doing this on my motorcycle for years; never had a part fall off or fail yet that I wasn't aware of before hand.

If those parts are breaking apart, then they need replacment anyhow.

Di-Electric grease all of the electrical connectons, spray the distributor & coil with WD-40.

Soak the enine with fuel oil or Gunk, let it soak for 15 minutes, and blast the dirt , grease & grime off with a pressure washer.

It'll be squeaky clean.

This made me laugh Bucko. Does this mean that you have had parts fall off or fail, but they are only ones you already knew about? Thanks, I needed that after a long day at the office.

Poor man's hot tank = plastic container, simple green, garden hose, and a can of WD-40 to displace the water from the oil galley afterwards.
