what makes the coil more hotter than the normal temp. i have this problem when the coil gets hotter the engine stops. but when i put a wet cloth on the coil the engine keeps running until i reach my destination. i change 3 coils already but the problem still the same. can you help me solve this problem? thanks guys. i really appreciate your help.

Hi,

Odd, its got to be getting darn hot!!
Where is your coil located? Is all the tin around the engine in place? Is the rubber seal around the tin there? Are all of the cooling pipes off the fan shroud in place?? City driving or highway driving?

it is located in the fan shroud. tins and seals are complete. i've been driving this car 3 years since restoration and don't have any problem. the problem came up 2 months ago but still doesn't find any solution. regular check up and change oil. is the distributor can affect the coil? the coil is very hot. hope for your help. im running a 36 hp engine.

Are you running 6volts? Some coils have a internal resistor in them. You might ask your parts guy. I know some 12 volt coils have resistors, not sure about 6 volt. Good Luck

im running a 12v system, im using a red coil which has an external resistor. thanks

Stupid question... But the coil isn't 6v is it?

thesaint59 Thu Jul 17, 2008 12:33 am

nope, the coil is 12v. does the distributor can affect the temp of the coil?

83_WabbitGTI Thu Jul 17, 2008 6:40 am

Only if the points are shorting.

Have you tried just a normal standard (good variety) blue coil?

thesaint59 Fri Jul 18, 2008 12:56 am

yup, already tried the blue coil. tried to replace the contact point and condenser, still the same. but no problem during night time. i really need help regarding this problem. thanks

I'm not quite sure what to say... Check all of the wires coming off the coil. Make sure they're not shorting. Look at the solenoid on the carb, see if it's shorting?

Besides what you've already changed.... I would look and see if the disty cap has a crack and the spark is arching to ground.

In your post You said no problem at night. With your lights on you will have a lower voltage at the coil. You might try running you lights during the day to see if it still does it. Sounds like you need a resistor before the coil. Or a coil with a resistor built in. Check your voltage at the coil, with the key on, with the engine idleing, with the engine turning 2000 rpm. repeat with the lights on and post your results. Good Luck

Have you verified that the charging system is regulating at 14V as it should?

Russ Wolfe Fri Jul 18, 2008 10:29 pm

Try just a plain black 12V coil. The blue coils do run hotter.
And as Andy said, check the charging system.

thesaint59 Sat Jul 19, 2008 1:22 am

i already check the charging, its ok, 14. 4 mechanic and 1 electrician already check my car but still can't find the solution. but the engine runs good. do i need to re wire and change distributor? that was my first coil the black one.
