got a 914 motor for cheap, going to be rebuilding it for my baja beetle, was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions on a rebuild kit, relativley cheap

i know its a f.i model, not home so i cant remember the engine number, the guy said it was a 914...

what kind of numbers could i get out of this, torque and hp,

1.7's -80hp codes W,EA
1.8L's 76hp code EC
2.0L's-95hp code GA,GC

this is with FI but going to dual webbers with a cam change works well

Not a whole lot comes cheap on the Type 4 engine - just not enough produced. I'd stick with the stock pistons and cylinders - just do a good valve job, hone cylinders and replace the rings. Low end of engine my not need anything if under say 80k miles (914 was light and bottom end is strong). You'll have to change the 215mm
flywheel (or have a lot of machine work done on it) to a bus 210mm one with PP/Throw-out bearing if you are using a T1 transmission/starter. Then ther is cost of converting it to an upright from a pancake engine. MASSIVE IV shroud kit is not cheap - although if you can weld you can do the Joe Cali conversion using old VW shrould/cooling pieces.

well i have a weber prog. for my type 1 motor right now and was told i could install that on the 714 motor with a little modification to the jets, ever hear of this, and ive seen baja's going without the upright conversion so im not overly worries about that, just trying to do the work as cheap as possible since its more of a toy,
got the motor for 100 bucks, it is efi
and i believe the engine code starts with a G

so basically strip the top end, clean it all up, reinstal the heads after a port cleaning and a valve job

will the efi heads work ok, do i just leave the injectors in for sealing purposes...

what kind of lift and duaration should i look at, lifters, and such, would new valve springs be a good idea as well...

the injectors don't go in the heads, they go in the intake manifold. take the manifold off and you should be good to go.

ok, now, about an exhaust system thatll work in the baja set up
and where i can buy an intake that will alow me to use my 2 barrel weber with the 914 motor

How do you route the incoming cooling air? The problem with T3 and T4 motors in buggies is that they tend to recycle hot cooling air.

since its a baja, the back is completely open, however if i noticed colling issues i could probably duct in air similiar to the old brake ducts on mustangs of the 60's, piping in cold should help anything like that

A tough and clumsy fab job to route ductwork from the very back/low side of the T3 engine up and forward to clear cool air. VW used the rear valance and fender volumes but those are removed on a baja.

What exhaust are you going to use for the 914 engine in your baja?

ponyboy88 Sun Jul 27, 2008 8:39 am

ive heard fat performance has an exhaust that'll work

now as far as the rebuild, just going simple,
wheres good prices on the items you mentioned,
if i were to do new heads, or rework the originals, new piston rings, and maybe a new cam and lifters do you think id be fine

would my type 1 heads bolt to this set up???
some1 i was talking to swore they would, skeptical tho
