View original topic: Sliding door handle removal

I searched around but didn't find anyone specifically talking about this...

'86 westy, newer style outside door handle.
I'm just trying to remove the outside slider handle...
I removed the interior panel, and the screw that should be holding the handle on. It had some blue lock-tite type stuff on it and was tough to remove (original?).

Should the handle just pull right off now? Mine still seems as tight as it was with the screw in there. I pulled and pulled and tried to work it out of the assembly, but it wouldn't budge.

Did the PO maybe glue it in there? Or maybe it's never been removed and is stuck?

Any advice is most appreciated.

It is still functioning fine, but I want to remove it to R&R it. Now that I've painted my front door handles, the slider handle looks pathetic.

thanks in advance.

Here I'll bump it. Slow day at work. It is possible that maybe some of the blue loctite is holding it together. There was a pretty good discussion of the side door handle a month or so ago. The poster was asking about the tumbler spring. There were some pictures posted. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=228788&highlight=tumbler

This should be a sticky.

Well thanks for the reply rsxsr. I read through that thread already, and there's some good info and pictures in there.

I guess by the lack of responses to my question, that everyone just assumes the handle should pull right out once the screw is removed. I still can't get mine out unfortunately. I even tried tapping it out from the inside with a hammer, but it won't budge.

I don't recall having to use a hammer and drift. I feel your concern that you are missing a circlip or set screw that is keeping it from coming free. Try spraying some PB blaster into the tumbler and letting it soak. Have you looked in the Bentley Manual? If I have time, I could check mine and see if there are subtle differences through the years. I'd ease up on the tapping with a hammer until you get more solid information.

It should slide out if I'm not mistaken. I haven't pulled one in a year or two, but am quite sure there wasn't any trick to it.

Mine came out without a problem. Just the one screw. Probably got loctite on the square shaft. If the door is locked would the tumbler hold it in?

Should just slide out.
I just changed the handle and the latch mech. and it only took about an hour.

Below is a pic of my mechanism...
You can see the blue loctite on the interior handle screw, but there was some on both.

Art, your new handle looks like it doesn't have the female threaded bit in it?

I still can't get mine out unfortunately...
when I pull on it from the outside, it is a tiny bit wobbly now, but is pretty stuck in place. I think I may just leave it, since the only reason I was going to remove it was to paint it. I think the PO must have glued it in there.

No Actually, that is what it looks like with the handle out.
