Mine was not so shiny, and had ribs like a quarter coin along the sides, but was that style.
When the gasket leaked, I could not buy this style form the dealer--they had been recalled and a newer, more secure (but larger and uglier) style was all VW could sell. |

This is more like the one I remember, on my '65 and '67. Mine was not painted, it was a galv finish. |

Yes, this is the correct style.
The one in the first link looks like it may be proper, but need to see the underside. The one in the first link appears to have been buffed to a shiny finish. They shouldnt be shiny or painted.

Painted - not repainted. They were not painted to begin with. Someone just tried to "pretty" it up by painting it (like the other guy who buffed it shiny). Paint can be removed and the shiny will dull from oxidation. If the underside of the shiny one looks like the underside of the painted one, then either will work. Just get a new cork gasket  |

No. That's an older style. It won't fit.

Yes. It helps when you post the photo. It saves time and everyone else can see what you're referring to. This should be correct style, but like I said, it's just been buffed to a shiny fininsh. It will dull and oxidize over time, then it will look like it should

Mine looked like this not too long ago (picture from the other thread)
but is was darker due to more surface rust. Apparently these were not stainless steel, and over time would rust up pretty bad.
I tried a trick that seemed to work. I took the cap off, and in a small bowl soaked it in white vinegar for two weeks..you could see the vinegar turn brown from eating the rust.
Then I took it out, dried it off, and rubbed it real good with some fine steel wool, and presto it looks new with a dull shine to it...like new steel. These caps were not painted originally and the best thing to do is to do some surface rust treatment on them to bring them back. |

| Interesting... I didnt know that vinegar ate rust. I just use Naval Jelly for surface rust and it works very quickly. |
