Is all that is involved in putting a Swing axle body (pre 68) on an IRS pan (68 on) lifting the rear inner wheel mounts by about 2 inches?
I do understand that depending on which year IRS pan I use I may need to change the Seat mounts to keep the originals.
So do all the other body/pan holes line up or is their some modifying required with that also?
And does everything like wheels within the arches, foot pedal within body, motor within engine bay, etc all line up exactly too?
Thanks |

The legal title goes with the pan, and be sure to keep the original plate from the body.

Everything fits except that rear body mount. On some really early cars there is a difference in how the body mounts to the beam, but its an easy bolt up.

why don't you just get one of those bolt up IRS kits? I forget who has the bolt up version of the kit, could someone post a link?

Thanks for the replies, I have considered the IRS kits but as I am in Australia I have to ship the kit over and that costs a small fortune as no-one that I know of sells a kit here in Oz.

Thanks for the posts and pics outlining the details of how involved it is to convert a swingaxle to IRS - I'm sure others appreciate it too. As I am not that skilled and dont wish to pay someone else to do it, I think I will just go with a complete pan swap and raise the mounts in the wheel arches - I'm confident in handling that, thats about my limit (I think!)

No worries. :)
I wish I had the skill...at the moment, I pay more than I help, on my bug...but I'm learning a lot, and the next car of mine that I start on, I want to do the bulk of the work.
We never got IRS in my part of the world, so my ride is something of a spectacle and it's been an interesting journey, to say the least.
I have no how idea how this thing is going to ride. :o :D
Good luck with your project!
