some how my generator failed without me knowing. I found out yesterday when i decided to tighten the belt.

The top pulley is missing half of the metal tabs that go into the bottom pull. and the washers seem to have serverly chaffer the pat of the bottom pulley that they sit on.

i pulled the generator out to inspect and looks like the coop wire loop on the motor blew. because its binding the generator from rotation on the axis.

I have two extra alternators and no generators.

how do i switch to using the alternator

I'm assuming the car is already 12V? It will need to be to run an alternator. In addition to the alternator, you will need an alternator-specific stand. I think the old generator backing plates will work fine. Might need a new pulley if yours is chewed up.

HEre's some tips on the wiring:

Finally, your fuel pump will no longer come off with the alternator installed. Consider looking for an alternator-compatible fuel pump as well.

thankyou very much. I read somewhere that there were two different kinds of alternators that cam on the bugs , will both work?

looking at my alternator there is a thick red wire and 3 other wire leading offof a 3 prong connector where do these connect?

depending on the alternator you have, there are internal and external regulated types.

if you're running an internally regulated alt. i believe there's a b+ lug on top as well as a dash lite or a regulator male terminal.

you'll probably find the alternator binds up the carb linkage if it's still single carbed;there's a spacer available to lift carb up a bit.

the alternators that i have are AL78.s

i have the alternator pedastals but you say the alternator will interfere with my current single carb set up.

also do i need a special voltage regulator with this non internal alternator ?? or can i use the generators voltage regulator.

anyone have thre wiring for this ??

The generator voltage regulator is completely different from an alternator regulator. An alternator's regulator has to "chop up" the alternating current into something resembling direct current while regulating the output of the unit. Much different than regulating a direct current generator. Are your external regulated alternators Bosch or Motorola?

043903803 was the VW part number for the Motorola regulator. 043903803a was the VW part number for the Bosch regulator.

Regulators for Bosch externally regulated alternators are getting really freaking expensive!

Motorola ones, I don't think you can even get those new anymore.

What engine and carburetor are you running now? Your carb may or may not be in the way - if happens that you have a late model DP with a 34PICT-3 and you have the linkage acclerator pump that looks like this then it should work OK-
(the dashed lines show the earlier style linkage that hits the alternator)
