I am putting this 67 transaxel in my 65
I have had the transmission lying around in my garage for a while
and when I put it in the car I noticed I had about a half an inch of the axle splines sticking out past the drum.
I know I used the parts that came from the 67 when I took it off, now its been a few months so I don't remember having a spacer between the drum and the nut, but it sure looks like it needs one.
WTF did I do here? |

| the later axles have a longer spline than the early ones;i had the opposite situation on my beetle with short axles and later brakes, but i knew it was going to happen and turned a slice off the nose of the drums in the lathe.you can use a later drum or switch the axles.i'm not 100% sure of interchangability but i think 66/67 drums are needed.do some searching on the site..i'm sure this has been covered somewhere...mike |

I did a search, there is a thread vaguely referring to the 67 transmission,
basically its a cluster f***
you can have a short spline short axle, or a long spline long axle, or a long spline short axle depending on the month of conception.
what I need is a 67 drum for the long spline long axle
funny thing is these are the parts that came off the 67 I had, maybe I overlooked it being really loose, I never drove it as it was way past rusted. |

| just a thought;before you go any deeper, see what your tire clearance will be like with long axles...i had to put short axles on my '60 to get things back where they belong...not a big deal to change axles, just a bit of a mess. |

1967 only is long axle with short spline. 1968 is long axle long spline. |

| You need a 68 rear drum it sounds like. I had the opposite on my 67. Short splines long snout on the drum. Its a Euro so I machined some of the lip off a 68 drum so I could get the nut on and keep my Euro four lug. Isnt this 67 stuff fun? Give a 68 drum a try and see what happens. |

Sounds like you have a 68 trans.. they were long axle long spline.. so were the type 3's
If you have another couple of the rear bearing spacers (#3 in the link below) they are just the right width to use in between the axle nut and drum to compensate for the longer splines. I found that tip from some searches I did the other day about using a T3 transmission in my T1 buggy pan

Yep. You can have a drum redrilled or use the spacers. Either way should do ya. Let us know what you figure out. |

is there any danger in this, using my limited knowledge of physics and metal fatigue I can't find any reason it wouls be dangerous. But I had better ask first. |

| my black 67 had a 68 trans in it. i used the bearing spacer to take up the slack between 67 drum and the axle nut. i only use this tip on street cars and never on a race beetle. |

| Just run the short axles off your 65 trans.Long axles will make the wheels stick out far and it looks like crap.Plus if your car is lowered the tires might rub. |

I agree..
Just pull the axles and axle tubes from your 65 and install them in the 67 tranny. That is what I did on my 66 bug. The long axles look like crap on the 66. |

the 65 lost a drum ruining the drum axle and brakes, so not an option.
let me throw the wheels on and see if it looks wide, if so I will scrounge some axles up somewhere. |

the spacer should be fine.. its a heat treated spacer and should be plenty strong
I haven't run it myself yet.. I'm still building my buggy up. I found that tip here on the forums when searching for info about the various axle lengths. |

Also.. I've got long axles on my '67. Its lowered and I have no clearance problems. Its all about using the right tire combinations..
There is an aesthetic difference.. but everyones opinions vary on that
For me.. price is a big factor  |

well its in spacers and all, I'll let you know how it turns out
I don't think anybody will look past the rust and dents long enough to see the wider wheel base
yes my garage is small, better than the slab of ice I had last winter.
take note of the thesamba.com sticker on the back. |

drop it and drive it.
nothing spectacular, I live in a high rust zone so until I get back to Cali I am only doing the bare minimum. |
