View original topic: Ventilated Wheel Slots on Spare Tire

I have a 66. Four wheels have correct ventilated slots, but the spare is an older unslotted wheel. It takes the flat hub cap like the slotted wheels.

My question is whether VW ever supplied the older unslotted wheels for the spare tire on the 66 models to use up the old stock - or has my car simply picked up an unslotted wheel along its way?

Thanks

While I don't know for sure, I would guess all the spares were also slotted. This is something we may never know unless someone comes up with a example of a non-slotted spare with fantastic proof that it is original. Since your car is a late '66, it seems unlikely they were still using up old stock. Also, I don't think flat hubcaps fit on a regular ->65 wheel, even with the clips removed (??).

Your wheel sounds like an early Type 3 wheel to me.

It's sounds like an early Type 3 wheel as others have stated, my '66 is as original as they come and it has a slotted spare.

All 5 wheels always matched

Thanks for the input. I thought my unslotted wheel was "foreign equpment", but just wanted to be sure before before getting a new wheel.

Smooth 5 lug wheel that takes a flat hubcap is indeed a Type 3 wheel. Used from Approx. 11/63 until the end of '65 model year.

And I will buy that wheel if you want to get rid of it. I am sorry, but I do not have any slotted wheels that I could trade you. I sold my set of 4 a while back.

Does it look like this??

Also spare wheels dont have hub cap clips nor the holes for them.

Yes they do, up through 1965. If you do not have hubcap clip holes, or the slots like a 66-67, then you do not have a type 1 wheel.

That wheel I show above is a Type 3 wheel. they NEVER had hubcap clips, and had a different offset to the wheel.
