What's occuring vw boys and girls? I have a brilliant little 1965 type 1, and it's just started to not start.... I have checked the following:
1) gas in the tank - check;
2) battery charged - check;
3) car turns over - check;
4) lines into distributor properly attached - check;
Until a few weeks ago, it couldn't wait to be turned over and kick off running. The engine ran well and didn't burn oil so I am suprised about this latest issue. :( So, it turns over but doesn't start. Any ideas??
Cheers! |

Also, check your idol cut off valve on the side of your carb. I was having the same problem on my 66. I made up a new wire to run from my coil to the ICV and choke and it fired right up. You can check it by turning your key on and unplug the valve, you should hear a click as the valve shuts.
Hope this helps,
Rick |

Thanks for the quick responses!! -
I'll try swapping out the spark plugs as I have never changed those. I have only owned it for about 6 months and my automech skills leave something to be desired. I have the idiots guide so I'll try and find the appropriate bit in there for the ICV. I appreciate the help.
Rick - Is there any sound vw clubs in the Tampa area? - cheers pal! |

| your carburetor float may be stuck. Open the jet at the bottom of the bowl and see if you get gas coming out. If not, that is your problem. Take out the air filter, disconnect the top of the carburetor and blow some air around the float connections and the jet - that should do it. |

Will it not start at all now or is it just when it is hot? If it's not wanting to start at all, one thing that bit me a few months ago was that the distributor raised up and the gear turned 180 on me. I didn't find out until I started checking valves, but the easy way to tell once I knew what it was, I just pulled up a little on the rotor, not enough to remove it, and was able to turn the rotor by hand. |
