My steering wheel had loads of play so I stripped the column (which was identified as a '65 ish). Turns out that there were no bearings (although the housing was there) so I purchased a similar '3 piece' kit to this:

I removed the old bearing housing and replaced with the bottom left shown in the picture. But I am unsure how the other clip part goes in (shown in the bottom right of the picture). With the bearing in alone I still have a few mm of play up and down so assume that this clip part just bangs in and removed all play but it refuses to go! The old clip I had is slightly different (thinner) but even that won't go in. Am I missing something obvious?
After that, there is the spring and then some kind of plate to hold the spring in and then a circlip. Is this the correct order? What is the purpose of the spring?
Thanks |

Ok, I have finially managed to sort out the bearings and realise where the clip goes. However, now I have put it all back together with the indicator housing etc, I have just gone to put the steering wheel back on and there is literally no thread sticking out to stick the nut on!!! What's happened??? My housing won't go back any further... Is the column telescopic or something??? Does the outer column move somehow?
Thanks in advance. |
