View original topic: Stock 1600 DP won't idle. Checked everything I can think of!

I have a stock 1600 dual port I bought off craigslist and can't seem to get this thing to idle properly. Yesterday after I drove it to the gas station to put fresh gas in it she idled good when I pulled back into the driveway but had to bounce the throttle at stop lights on the way there and back. It doesn't seem to run good unless the RPMs are up there. Here is what I have checked out.

-Good compression and oil pressure

-New plugs that it came with were gapped at .015 and fouled so I replaced them with new ones and gapped them to .028 - no change

-009 is advancing properly and timed at 28 degrees full advance

-Pertronix installed in place of points.

-Replaced Bosch blue coil - no change

-recent 7mm silicone plug wires

-valves are still dead on at .006

-replaced 34PICT3 carb with another good used unit - no change

-removed end castings and center section and checked all gaskets - no change

-Had battery tested and it checks out fine according to the fine folks at Schucks

-Recent ground straps at tranny and battery to generator stand.

-Coil got real hot to touch and was advised to check distributor being all the way down against the clamp so it could ground properly and it was up about 3/16" and I got it back down and now coil doesn't get hot anymore.

Any other things I should be checking??????

Sounds like you have two carbs that have plugged idle circuits or a vacuum leak, if everything else checks out.

when you replaced the carb, did you use the same idle cutoff valve? did you check it?

Both carburetors appear to have new idle cut-off valves. I didn't think about them being bad because of how shiny they were.

I will check the idle circuits for clogs. I have never ran a single carb motor so I will look up how to do that for the PICT3's.

I will also double check for vacuum leaks with a mist bottle. I haven't done that yet.

Adjust the carb as per the Bentley Manual. The 34 pict is very tempermental in the adjustment department.

Anybody hear any truth to the tune of an 009 and a 34PICT3 not being compatible? I just stumbled across this article.

Been running that combo for a few years. It is possible, but they can be "touchy". I've never had to physically modify the carb. Just make sure your timing is on, the carb (idle jet) is clean and you don't have vacum leaks. Then just start tuning. Here is some good info on getting everything dialed in.

Can you honestly say you know how to set up a pict3, if the butterfly set up to not close shut etc, i think you need a bentley manual to give you the correct steps.

:D
