Ive been doing some thinking and i want to make my bus a custom double cab out of my 1972 westy. The photo is rough but you can see what im going for. Has anyone seen or made one of these?

Are you going to shorten the slider? That seems like a pain! Also, the roof hole on a Westy already goes pretty far back, you might have to move it forward some. What is the point of the camper top, would you happen to be a little person? I think it could be cool if done right and the proportions are right, but it also would cost a ton!

Your bus, go for it! Make a thread too, that way no matter how it turns out it will be a good example of what to do/not to do. 8)

yea, my plan would be to shorten slider and cut and move the roof forward. Since there will be a big hole in the roof and no room for a sunroof ill just shorten the fiberglass top.

That looks retarded.

WE roughed one in for a customer in '92. 1st of all forget about that pop top. Go with a sliding sunroof and maybe 2 skylight windows off a pre-68 deluxe bus. Much more sanitary and functional. U will have to hinge the slider door to open like a barn door. Draw out cuts with a marker; then cut out with saws -all. About 3 hours to cut down. Don't do it unless you have some fabrication skills. Good luck.

Well im going for a sliding door. the tracks for the door are on the floor and in the middle of the door. i think it would be cool to slide open. im pretty good with metel, i work at a local vw restoration shop. so i have access to all the good tools :D

Well, at least it's a '72.......if you need another shitty doner lemme know, there's one just down the road.

You might need a few.

73 Kombi, I sent you a PM with a question.

As far as the bus. I kind of like it, but it would take a lot of work to do it right. Do it and lets see pics.

By shortening the door you are going to have to add some medal at the rear of the door, including the middle track for the slider, if you want it to slide. This would require a donor bus to take from. Screw the top, not functional and kind of a pain. Also, what is your plan for the center section? It will be too small to use for camping, I don't even think a bed will fit.

Railingbus Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:18 pm

I didn't plan on camping in the bus, my plan is to get a rear seat out of a donor bus. Out of that same donor bus i will use the slide rails. What do you think about a duel sliding doors on both sides? As for the top, im oped for ideas.

Well if you are not planing on camping in it, whats the point of making it look like a camper. Why not just save your sanity and a couple buses and buy a DC? I like the idea in theory because it could be cool. It would take dedication and much skill to pull off. I say, keep the top and make the opening very small and put a small bed up top for a kid. Then make the entire rear section a bed, making the foot of the bed at the slider and the head at the wall on the other side. You wouldn't do any hanging out in it but it would make a good sleeping arrangement.

busmania24 Wed Jul 23, 2008 7:28 pm

What if you put the pop top on the bed of the truck? Wouldnt be to useful for hauling stuff, but you could camp in it.

i_am_cool_fred Thu Jul 24, 2008 6:41 am

if you could graft in a flip seat in the front and a z bed in the back you could camp in it :-k

it'd still look stupid but you could do it and make it functional

putting a flip seat in it would make everyone in the bus community pissed

i say go for it \:D/
