View original topic: Couple of turbo questions

My setup right now is a 1641, 110 cam and dual 40mm kads set up by AJ simms. Can I blow through these kadrons at 5psi using a holley blue pump and a tapped holley regulator? Will I need different emulsion tubes? Where can I buy hats for these or will I have to make my own?

I'm fabbing up a header right now, few questions.
The turbo is a holset h1c, its pretty small and has a nice split tang hot side.
I am building a header to mount the turbo just above the distributor. I was thinking about making the header out of 1 1/2 inch (too big? too small) mild steel 16ga. I plan on merging these together with a 1 1/2 collector that outputs 3 inch, then reducing this to 2 1/2 inch right before the turbo. My discharge side is going to be 2 1/2. I want to put a decent muffler on it, I don't want it to be loud at all. I have a deltagate mark-2 38mm wastegate, I plan on outputting this at the collector, then having the discharge go into the downpipe.

I have one of the oil pumps that has a spin on filter on the side. I was thinking about getting one of the... things.. that goes between the filter and the plate that is tapped to put a oil cooler in. I cant think of the name of it at the moment, but I put one on a 80's dodge charger turbo and it helped out a lot. Anyone know where I can buy a good one? The one I purchased at advance was cheap, I'd like a built in thermostat if possible.
... another option is to replace that pump with one that has an output and input.. and putting a filter and cooler in place, but I don't know if I have a flat cam or a dished cam? I'd like a way to increase oil capacity without putting one of those sumps that hang under the engine..

Obviously I wont be able to run a rear engine tin with this setup, and i'm hoping to fit it all under a decklid with standoffs. Im kind of worried about how all this is going to effect the cooling... I hate to run with no decklid, but I will if I have to.

I know its a lot of questions buried in a lot of statements, but I am just toying around with it right now. The engine has endplay and the transmission wont stay in 4th, I'm not worried if I pop either one. I expect it, that's part of the fun. I am going to put this "kit" onto the next motor I build (probably a 2110).

I'm mainly worried about how these kad's will do with boost. I def want to do a blow through setup with these, i'm not a big fan of draw through.

I'm going to use this thread as a build up (sort of) so i'd really like input, nothing is set in stone right now.

I picked up a new transaxle, dropping my motor tomorrow morning and swapping them out. Going to run up to my local VW shop and see if they have any performance clutches.. Going to order my tubing tomorrow as well. Its going to be 1 1/2 inch primaries into a 3 inch collector that narrows to a 2 1/2 inch at the turbo.

Also going to retorque everything before I put the motor back in.

Hold on a second there, turbo.

Your piping sizes are all wrong, and an H1C is waaaaay overkill for a 1600. If I were you, and I were serious about doing this, here's the route I'd take.

Ditch the Kads and get 36 Dells, or call AJ and have the Kads set up for turbo. For primary piping, it would be 1 3/8" to a Burns collector (Click Here), to the turbo. The turbo would be an internally gated T25/28, for simplicity and quick boost response. After the turbo, run piping as big as you can fit with a muffler of your choice. Get programmable ignition, such as Megajolt or something else. Get your case full flowed, and ditch the filter pump.

Bout all I can think of right now.

This is a H1c with the TINY exhaust scroll. Your thinking of the HUGE ones.
The turbo was free and is brand new.

This is on a budget. The smallest cheapest mandrel bent pipes I can find at the moment are 1 1/2.

I have done TONS of turbo set up's and haven't found one that I like that is internally gated. I always use external wastegates, in the case of this Deltagate Mark-II... I have every spring made for it.

I've read about other people using stock Kad's to 12psi, we'll see.. Its not like a Holley where I can drill the power valve.

I was actually thinking about Megajolt, but I want it to just run right now. Eventually the car will have megasquirtv2 on it to control everything.

Edit: Also those collectors are mad overpriced. You can make the pipes with a crush bender, hack off the inside radius and tig them all up into a collector for CHEAP.

I still don't think you'll spool that thing with a 1600, but feel free to try. Even guys that put them on their KA24 powered Nissans only spool them at around 4000 RPM.

Yeah, most people get the H1c that has the 16cm^2 housing off a dodge ram. This one has the 9cm^2 housing. Its a beefy looking housing but the scroll is tiny. The compressor side is VERY small.
