Howdy Gang,
We installed a set of new points and condenser in a Ronco Magneto off a VW powered sawmill engine we are rebuilding.
I hooked the mag on to the Sun Distributor tester and got a good white spark on the test spark plug but when I looked inside the mag there was a hotter stronger spark at the base of the High Tension Lead.
After shutting down the Sun tester I wiggled the HTL and saw that the insulation was cracked at the base and holding on by only a few strands of wire.
the points and condenser removed in this picture
the red dot near the yellow wire is the HTL and was appox. 3" high before it broke off
I'd like to pull the mag apart and solder in a new HTL
Have any of you had one of these mags apart(and back together).
I tried googling Ronco mags but get a lot of eBay ads
Any good magneto sites ?
There is the roll pin that holds the drive on the shaft just like VW distributors.
two special safety wired nuts holding the base together.
Another special slotted nut holding the govenor on (under the rotor)
Any idea if I'd have to pull the mag apart at the top to get the HTL coil or
if the mag has to be disassembled from the bottom to get to the coil and HTL
BTW the advance is fixed at 20* @ 2200rpm does that sound about right
the mill runs at 2200 rpm when cutting
thanks

Da Tow'd,
www.taylorvertex.com . A VW magneto should have made by Scintilla. IIRC Ronco is a US company that specialised in magneto's and repairs and such like. Again, IIRC they are still in business.
