ok, got a new one... it comes and goes, sometimes loud sometimes not... it sounds as if something is rubbing a tire, like a wheel on kind of wobbly or something, scraping part of the time in its revolution. like, rub......rub.......rub......rub...... does that make sense? frequency increases with speed... but, heres the kicker- push in the clutch and it goes away.
what could this be? |

| But that would make noise when you pushed the clutch in, my money's on a bad CV, one of the few items that only makes noise under load. |

hmmm
well the odd thing is that the frequency seems to match that of a wheel revolution, which is what i thought it was at first, i pushed in the clutch so i could let the engine back down to idle so i could hear better. but then the sound goes away every time i do that.
i dont think its clutch related, as noises from that would match in frequency with engine RPMs, correct?
how about gear related? i still have not cracked into my trans to check the fluid, as ive been unable to find GL-4, and ive read about folks changing thier gear oil only to create new leaks from the thinness of the new oil... i guess i need to get under there and at least check it. |

By pushing in the clutch you reduce the load, causing the CV noise to go away. Matching wheel revolution also is a good indicator of this as the problem. A CV problem makes sense and is easier to fix than a tranny problem, I would check there first. |

CV or it could also be a rear wheel bearing.
Does letting off the throttle also stop it? |

| You can repack those 4 CV joints for cheap money ~ $40 and a days worth of work. They are supposed to be done every 30K miles and then they will last forever. When were yours last done? |

lol probably never.... ive only owned the bus for 2 years, and a year and a half of that she wasnt running. have no idea of the rest of the history of the bus, other than that she sat for at least 3 years just before i got her... PO was likely not the mechanical type, either.
guess its time to do it then! will be my first time doing them. not even sure where they are. =D i will search for details on the procedure (unless someone feels like posting what needs to be done...) |
