1/ This morning I put the POS (low oil pressure) engine from the wife's beetle into my '64 bus. I spent all afternoon trying to get it running but to no avail. Gas, spark, air - all check. Timing, points - check. Fuel cutoff solenoid - check. Jets clear - check. I was at my wits end and about to write a post asking for help when I decided to check the valves. Rockers not bolted down, valves not set. I'm an idiot. I bet it will work when I take care of that.
2/ The plugs I pulled out of this engine were Bosch W 7 DC. The threaded part is longer than the W 8 AC plugs I have always used. Are these just the wrong plugs put in by the PO or is there some reason these would be in there? I think the longer threaded section means the electrode stuck further into the head chamber. Any ideas? |

What kinda of heads are they? 040, 041, 042, 043, etc?
Some do take the 14mm 3/4" reach plugs, get a good look at the plug hole with a small mirror and you should be able to tell if you really need them. |

Bus is finally up and running, with the W 8 AC plugs (short). The plugs I removed were W 7 DC (long). The heads are 040 101 373 2 (1600 singleport).
I've always used the short plugs on everything, I never knew the long ones were out there. Which goes with which heads? |

The DC plug is a 3/4" long reach plug used on aftermarket type 1 heads and type 4 heads.
Depending on the thread length in the head for the plug you may or may not need the DC plug. Going by head numbers alone will not confirm the plug type needed as many 040, 041, 042, 043, 113, 311, etc heads have been welded up and modified by head re builders and porters. Welding up the head and installing long reach plugs is an upgrade to the stock length short plugs.
You will need to measure the thread length to verify the plug type you need. |
