Hi, my son just lost a rod bearing in his 67 baja. We were going to build up a performance motor for it but he just can't find the money. The car came with a boatload of extra parts when we bought it so we just going to rebuild the old case instead (much cheaper)!

I had a couple of questions though......I need to ID the case before we get started. The numbers on the side are: 000.101.1028 Any one know what size engine that's supposed to be?

Also, if that is a 1600........can I run the brand new cam I found in one of those boxes? It's a Berg cam, on the end is it's stamped Berg 296 08. Will that run? I do plan on cleaning up the heads and possibly doing a little porting.

Thanks for the input guys.

Good cam for small combo or when low end torque is needed, but keep the compression low (8.0:1 or lower.) Will give a great vacuum signal for any plenum base carburetors, like a single 40mm Weber.

Letters.......OK
Upon looking for the letters I found a completely different (correct) number. Lets try this one.

That's a '67 1500, according to the old engine letter chart.

There are better cases out there, but you could build a little 1776 on it for little more than the cost of a stock build. At a minimum, you'll need to linebore it, punch out the case and heads for the bigger 90.5 cylinders, and clean everything really well.

The difference between a stock engine and 1776/1915 isn't much, but if money is the main issue, there may be no other alternative but stock.

Yeah, it's all about the money. The thing is we have so many new parts in boxes just laying around. The cylinders/pistons are still in good shape so a stock motor would not cost much at all.

Now, will that Berg 296 cam work with a stock 1500?

Also, we tore the case apart yesterday and found the crank is a little chewed up from when the bearing spun. Maybe we will have to bite the bullet and build up a new 1776 any way.
