just wanted to say thank you to lostorbit and everyone for the great suggestions. he suggested that i use the position on the fuse box where the buzzer was as the remote for the stereo. so when you put the key in the ignition the stereo turns on(don't even have to turn the key). no having to remember to flip a switch or burning up coils. simple easy and works, thats the way i like it.

If anyone needs more details or wants me to post the instructions let me know.

Thanks, although I can't take credit for the idea, I just passed along what I had read on Ratwell's site.

I didn't use a relay though, I just wired it directly in. Should I go back and put in a relay?

Please do... I was just thinking I needed to do this really soon as we are now living in our 1970 bay. It sucks not having the music when you want it. Thanks a lot!

I spent at least two hours trying to figure this one out myself. No matter which terminal I tried, I could not get power only when the key was in the ignition. I'd love a pic of the specific terminal you used for this.

Ok sorry guys i couldnt find the flash for my camera. here is what i did.

1: make sure you know your stereos wiring configuration. find the wire that turns on your system, should be 12v (NOT the 12v power wire that connects straight to the battery.)

2:make sure your door buzzer has been removed from your fuse box( this is based on my 1978 transporter)

3:you now are going to take a wire and strip one end and crimp a male connector to it (left one)

4: now looking at the fuse box from the cab we will be working on the right side of it on the under side (not front)

5: just wanted to say sorry its hard to see in most of my pics bc i have my trays in and didn't take them out to take the pics

6: you will need to find the power side of the buzzer. this is kind hard to see so see pics. in the pic the firewall is on the top, you will be on the opposite side of the fuse box. In the pic you can see my wire installed. its the same position as 34 but the second set over.(click to see full size)

7: after installing the fuse box side then connect the other side of the wire to your power switch wire i talked about earlier.

8: make sure your power wire is connected to the battery and then test it. just put key in ignition and it should power on. :D

Just went and had a look at mine (haven't switched in on in a long time) and the bugger switched on even without key or anything in it

Guess the PO must've wired it up to be constantly hot. Thanks for this trip...another thing to look into for the bus.

vdubadm Sun Jul 27, 2008 6:44 am

thanks for the step by step!

Rubber Duck,
I'm finding the same thing. The terminal (25) is always hot, no matter what I do with the key. Perhaps the terminals are different depending on the year? I'm a 73.

tripp0090 Sun Jul 27, 2008 6:32 pm

take a look and find where your buzzer was. then just try both (should only be 2.) also make sure your door is closed.

If you have an upright with a generator you need a relay because the wire from the key is a ground not a power wire. Do it this way. This was written for a bug but should apply wire color wise.

so to do this I......

1. Connect switched red wire from stereo to Buzzer relay terminal under fuse box.
2. Connect Yellow to constant source for memory.

Do I need in-line fuses or anything else or do I simply make the connections from stereo harness to these points?
