a couple things on my 1969 westy. on the dash there is a small red button with a capital "B" on it and on the back, above the brake lights (also my turn signals) there are white lights above it, but they dont light up for anything. should they light up?
thanks in advance bros.

that is the handbrake warning light. Also would alert you to a brake system failure in some models (i think). You want to be lit when the handbrake is on, and off when it is off. (ask me how i know you want it)

back up lights? I'm not familiar w/ '69 buses, but mine has a fuse in the engine compartment.

Correct on almost everything, but the handbrake warning light didn't start until 76, earlier busses only warned of a pressure differential in the system, push the light to test it on pre 72's.

okay, what Busdaddy said. Push it to test.

I could push mine til i'm blue, and it doesn't change a thing until i take off the handbrake. Like i didn't once when the bulb was loose. . . and then drove it hard ... and smoked the rear shoes.

l live and learn.

o well i never thought about back up lights  ha ill test that tonite. and as for the red button, my emergency brake doesnt work, so im guessing neither does the button? nothing happens no matter how many times i push it.

Mine is a 1971 Westy . The back-up light circuit consists of a hot wire from the positive side of the coil runing back into the firewall to the back-up light switch on the transmission.

Another wire runs from the other side of this switch through the firewall following the same path as the first wire. This wire is attached to the non-grounded side of the back-up light fixture and another wire from the back-up light fixture is the ground wire.

In my 71 there is a heavy sheath for each wire and the hole, with rubber grommet, is located just to the outside of the hole in the firewall for the brake booster vacuum hose - behind the number 3 cylinder.

When the key is switched on the circuit to the positive side of the coil is energized and this is when the back-up light circuit can function when the gear shift is in Reverse.

The second back-up light is connected to the first in a parallel manner.

Don't expect the back-up light to work if you haven't taken care of the contacts in the light socket. With Reverse engaged test the wire coming from the transmission for current and if it's NOT good at that point keep working on that part of the problem.

You can also may want to first do a simple continuity check on the wires running to and from the back-up light switch - now that you know what you are looking for.

ha...As Busdaddy say's, it's not involved with the handbrake (emergency brake). It has nothing to do with it. It is for monitoring the pressure in the dual circuit master cylinder. If the light comes on while you are driving and using your brakes, it is telling you that one of the circuits (front or back) has failed. Pushing it to test it only tests to see if the bulb is working and hasn't burnt out or is unhooked. Pushing it to test does not test the brake circuit. .....haha

Sammler gave a good description of the back up light circuit.
More simplier, power comes from the coil connection (with the key on), then to a fuse (black plastic fuse holder somewhere near the coil), then to the switch at the very front left side of the tranny, then back to the bulbs.
Get a circuit tester and start poking around at the connections to see how far along the line power is getting.
