View original topic: heater box to head stud replacement advice

First off I FINALLY got my 78 2.0 going in my 74 riv thanks to a ton of help, advice, and patience for my dumb questions from you all! Now for the crud, after getting her dialled in I noticed a leak coming from the head to the heater box on the 3-4 side. No big deal, I got 2 new copper gaskets (and a few other goodies, of course) and went to work this afternoon. On the second to last nut I noticed that it wasnt cinched down as far as the others, due to rust probably ( my fault  ) But when I went to take it off the Bastard busted off at the flange of the heater box  . I do stud extractions like this at work all the time but V-Dubs are different than tractors and I was just wondering if theres anything I should look out for or a method you guys use that may differ from what I usually do? Thanks again for all the help people! . . Mike (formerly 74 riviera rookie)

Broken stud repair is all the same. Use center punch drill bit to find center. Drill pilot hole 1/16...then 1/8 then the size of your stud. Use good quality square stud remover. Thread or chase threads in head.

in my experience when the stud breaks you almost never get it out, it has to be drilled out and rethreaded with a time-sert or similar. 2 litre heads have the worst problem this way.
