| Getting ready to install an electric pump and want to put in a relay. I've searched and found threads referring to using the oil pressure light, alternator, and coil to trigger the relay when the engine is running. My oil pressure switch only has one terminal so I don't think it would work. Using one of the idiot lights, is there a place at the fuse block that I can connect to so I don't have to run wires from the rear of the car? Anyone have a simple, effective way to wire it up without running wires all the way back to the engine? |

I wired mine to the front with a relay also. It's been so long, I don't remember how I wired it. Here's a diagram for a 69.

I used a fuel pump relay from an early 80's Audi/porsche 924/rabbit. It lets the pump run while cranking and while running, but if the engine stops the pump stops due to a connection with the coil lead. All the wires can be accessed under the front (including the coil + from the ignition key) The relay "reads" the pulses in the coil + wire.
I'll have to hunt for the wiring diagram for the relay.

| I think you mean the coil minus wire (terminal 1). That is the one that pulses. Connecting to terminal 15 (+) gives no protection as it is always on with the key. A Ford crash relay switch might also be a good safety addition. |

| This is kind of old but I need to plug my relay to the #1 post of the coil and want to know if this can be jumpered from under the front or do I need to run a new wire to the rear? Also my new engine has an alternator but in the engine compartment seems to only have 1 wire for the oil sensor, the big thick red wire from the battery, what appears to be a green wire( I think this goes to the plug in on the alternator, a wire that is split into two( this was for the electric choke and I think the other goes to the #15 on the coil), and one wire for the license plate light. I thought that there were more wires when an external regulator was used? Any input on how I have my wires listed would be appreciated. |

When I converted my 86 GTI to a carburetor. I ran the fuel pump from the ignition switch through a rocker switch. Every time I turned on the ignition the fuel pump ran. If I wanted to sit and park with the engine off and radio on I flipped the switch. The bonus was I had a fuel cut out switch to make sure that the car would not go far when stolen.
On my ghia I use the mechanical fuel pump works fine for me why would you convert to a electrical one. Just seems like more hassle to me. |
