I've been very busy with this damn thing lately. As a matter of fact, I need to slow down. My bank account is hurtin'.
Here's a short list of what I've been workin' on:
The frame head was bent badly, so my friend welded a donor one on for me:

Then I started fitting new pans. I'm 6'4", so I thought I'd move the seat track back a few inches.

Recently I got the pan done and painted up. Just have to do the underside. Also I ran a new steel fuel line in the tunnel.

To break up the monotony a bit, I made this:

My original shifter was rusted too badly to use, so I made this one out of a donor. I liked the look of the OG tapered shaft better. I extended it a few inches for fun.

I also got a donor pedal assy. and cleaned it up:

Right now I'm working on the transaxle. I'm replacing the trans mounts, broken return spring, side cover gaskets, nose cone gasket and bushings, input shaft seal, axle boots and bearing seals. I don't want this fucker to leak!

I've also spent a few long days at the local VW yard and got an OG Turkis fender, all four turn signals, quarter window glass, door glass, rear glass, headlight buckets, steering wheel, hood latch and handle, inside handles, trim, the afore mentioned pedals and shifter, and much more. I also got a ton of new parts in from Cip1 and WW.

Next comes dropped/extended springplates from M. Fisher, a front beam from Slowlow, drop spindles...and more, more, more. It's endless!!!

Finally got the trans done today...been working on it forever. Hopefully it actually works.
First I cleaned the big crap off of it, then installed new:

-input shaft seal
-side plate gaskets
-nose cone gasket
-axle seal kits
-wheel cylinders
-brake hoses
-brake shoes
-clutch return spring
-e brake cables

Got some decent drums (Thanks Icy), painted them gloss black, the rest of the parts are satin. Also I threw some additional welds on the clutch forks since I had the arm out. Can't hurt.

Now I can get my beam on the bench and start tearing into it.

Did a little BugSelecta work to get some needed inspiration:

Yup... my own! :)

Trans is done for now, so I got the beam on the bench today.

Tore down:

You can't really tell from the pics, but this beam is bent. I'm gonna consult with my friend/all around renaissance man to see if it can be straightened. If it can, I'm slicin' it up and makin' my own beam!

Is that right hand tie rod supposed to be straight?

Culito Wed Jul 08, 2009 8:47 pm

So...I was kind of excited today to actually start a bit of assembly. New MC installed:

I also installed the shift rod and got all greasy, and the shift coupler. I sent the beam off with my friend, and he seems to think he can straighten it. (I fixed his computer for him - favor trading is the way to go!) So...whenever that gets back to me, I can start my beam build.

Also, I got the underside of the pan stripped, seam sealed, primered, and the first coat of satin black on.

Culito Tue Sep 08, 2009 8:13 pm

The original beam was toast, so I got a replacement drum-to-drum front end from Icy (thanks, man!) and have started the narrowing process. Got the shock towers and bump stops taken care of today. Going 4" with sway a way adjusters.

Also, I got a set of drop spindles put together with new link pins and bushings.
Gettin' there!
